been down ponds with my lures and there has been a snap to the day......YES SNAP......there goes my rod..... with a few curses and a bite of the tongue ... Bazz kindly lent me his spare.

Well with my rod gone i have a reason to search for a new one i'm on the hunt,

I am still at college so i'm also on a budget of £60-£90

There are that may different brands with combo's i go in circles

I went to North West Angling this morning to stock up on a few pike lures but ended up feeling like a kid in a candy store, not knowing which ones to choose, and not sure whether to take the assistants advice on board or not?

So, I left the store empty handed with a plan to put it to the pikeangler comunity and see what you blokes have to say? I am unfortunately trying to apply what I know about lure fishing in South Africa to choosing lures which I want to use for catching pike in the UK ...

What's your favourite lures?

Being fairly new to the pike fishing game, I've had most of my success with the black or red flying C. If I'm having no luck whatsoever, I'll throw out the "C" and 80% of the time I'll get some action.

I've also had regular catches with this type of lure (excuse my ignorance on naming this):

.....it dives to a kinda mid depth and will float if left stationary. Run this thing past tree lines and I get following pike striking about 5ft from ...

had a few hours on the river using surface lures yesterday ( had 3 nice mid to high singles ) but was upset by TWO of the brand new drennon spin traces i bought yesterday braking at the lure clip when hit by a fish.

not only did this result in two expensive lures being lost , the pike may still have the lure attached!

i was wondering if anyone else has had issues with these traces as once could be a fluke but twice in one day must be poor product / workmanship.

What net do you use for landing lure caught fish?

My 42" soft mesh net is a wee bit cumbersome for this job

I like the idea of a rubber lure net and have looked at these ones:

http://www.brundallangling.com/wychwood-carp/rover_nets.htm

Trouble is, I cannot seem to find any details on the depth of the net.

Any help appreciated.

This is a continuation of the spinnerbait thread and the subject got me thinking. Yes, I do occasionally think....

I once had a theory about why lure fishing for pike appeared to be 'simpler' for many folk in English/Southern/Irish/Swedish waters because believe me, many have come up here with their usual banker lures for open days on Menteith and the like and come away with their tails between their legs wondering where it all went wrong and it's not that I think they did anything wrong ...

Alright folks - I've been experimenting at home with making my own lures so i thought i would post a step by step account of what i'm doing.

I don't admit to being any good at it, but i had a thought the other night that i couldn't afford to buy or even really find what lure i wanted-so why not have a crack at making one myself?

I tried to take pics as i went along to make things easier to understand. Also pics will enlarge if clicked on.

So...

I started with a 7" block of hardwood ...

If anyone hasn't read this article, (along with plenty of other bits and bobs on the 'Pike Angler' homepage) I suggest you do. It's very informative and it sorts out many of the facts and myths about what colours are, or for that matter, aren't visible to fish underwater.

Nice one Andy. Fascinating stuff.
