Mystery fish

Post  Bazz on Mon Oct 05, 2009 7:51 pm

Managed to lose a 'mystery fish' on the Trent yesterday. Big Chris from here recommended a place to try for Barbel so i gave it a go, finally! Trent Piker catches some Pike at this venue too. I was fishing a 12mm Halibut pellet on the edge of some fast water, well slower than normal, the Trent is low & clear at the moment! Evil or Very Mad
I had a sharp Chub like bite that i missed by a mile. All went quiet so i reeled in after a few minutes to check the bait was still on Rolling Eyes
I felt what seemed like a snag so wound down to it and pulled. All went free so i started to wind in. I soon felt some light tugging & assumed that a small Chub had been hooked. I continued to reel in expecting a fish of maybe 1/2 a pound or so.... When i was about 2 rod lengths out the rod (1&3/4lb TC) took a severe bend! I could feel a hefty fish swimming in towards the bank, slowly with very heavy tugs on the line, not straight at me but acroos the front of me. I was fishing a 10lb mainline & 3oz lead / size8 korum hook with hair link on it. I started to wind off the clutch sharpish! The fish hugged the bottom & would not turn! It felt as big as the 36" long Pike i caught last Winter. The hook knot snapped & i never got a glimpse of the fish. I am quite gutted! There are some Carp in this part of the Trent, also. Its rather wierd... maybe a Pike had grabbed the smaller fish i 'may' have hooked initially... Shocked Surprised

Sounds like a Pike to me Bazz. Had it happen to me several time over the years. Its a strange feeling because they don't take off like when you're fishing for them and strike.

Are there any cats in the Trent?

Sounds like a pike whacked your catch mate. Unlucky.

A 5lb cat came out of The Trent last year, back of the A1 pits section. I've heard a couple of other rumours, but nothing definite.
