Do Moon Cycles Affect The Predator

Post  cavemandom on Sun May 23, 2010 11:59 am

I'm Always trying to further my knowledge & skills & poses that edge, be it in the form of a lure or a single factor that needs to be an addition to a host of other circumstances on the day,I've learnt so much since I started lure fishing September last year So many different factors contribute to luring this magnificent creature onto my 5 mega pixel view finder, Does anybody have any knowledge or experience of lure fishing and the celestial calender...

Watercraft will serve you better than any list of moonphases but it's said the 3 days before and after a full moon are good (apparently). These days don't always fall on your day off so I prefer to work with watercraft and I do alright for it.

when you say watercraft Andy you mean things like water temp visibility features in the water to fish too the behavior of the shoal fish and ultimately the presentation of the lure your working and how you make the lure work, that's my interpretation of water craft, if fish behavior is a genre of water craft would you not then agree that the moon phases play a big part in the fishes behavior, the more successful anglers, the ones that make a living from fishing employ a more scientific approach to their craft at present, more now than it as ever been used in years gone by...

If you want a good laugh Andy, Try teeching a 14 year old what to look for in the art of watercraft, One of the most esential things to learn in the sport, And i agree it will work all year round, As for the moon phase this is only every 28days, Ok if you only go fishing once a month,

I never said anywhere that moon didn't affect fish behaviour. Of course it does but the supposedly ideal days to get fish of any variety don't always suit our schedule, so we have to employ what we know and that is watercraft. Do you think hunter-gatherers only went fishing 6 days a month?

So just because a handful of anglers believe in the moon cycle, that makes them better than all the rest who are excellent at reading the water, the lie of the land, the direction of the wind, feature finding, baiting up, choosing baits, balancing tackle, accurate casting and all the other parameters in fishing? What about matches then? More or less always on a weekend and yet there are chaps bagging up all day long and why? Because they know what they're doing and they simply cannot rely on the moon. Some of these guys make a living from fishing and very often when the moon is out of phase, do they not?

the more successful anglers, the ones that make a living from fishing employ a more scientific approach to their craft at present, more now than it as ever been used in years gone by

Like who? Name some anglers who make a living fishing 6 days a month. That's what you're suggesting. These guys have to catch fish regularly, almost daily or they wouldn't be making a living out of fishing. I don't know of any successful anglers who rely on the moon to make a living. Some use it certainly but they can't and don't rely on it. They rely on skill and watercraft because that IS why they're employed to do what they do.

Also, you can go fishing when the moon says so but unless you actually know where to go and how to go about it, the moon phase is next to useless. The moon won't help you catch fish if you're in the wrong part of the river, lake or 24 mile long glacial for instance.

I know how to locate pike on Loch Awe and it didn't take a moon phase to work it out. I used depth charts, OS maps, looked at the weather, did extensive recces of the water, spoke to locals, studied the subject in books, magazines, online, actually spent hours and hours fishing the place and replied heavily on instinct honed over 25+ years fishing. There was no magic shortcuts and I certainly didn't look at the moon.

Knowing something about moon phases is handy but it's only one tool in your toolbox. It isn't everything and all will come good. It's just not like that.

Besides, who wants to know when that red letter day or that new PB is going to happen? Where's the fun in that? I never want to know when my next PB will happen. If I did, I'd give up fishing because I'd never have to keep trying, improving, talking fish and gaining knowledge.

When you do finally break that PB, do you want it to be because you're a knowlegeable angler or because you read a chart?

Watercraft is everything. Moon phases is just a bit of information. That's all it is.

Just got back from a fishing trip I planned round the moon phases (which was very productive I'll just add, could be coincidental) and caught up with the forum."Watercraft will serve you better than any list of moon phases"
your opening statement suggest you was putting moonphases out of the category of water craft, sorry if you felt your superior knowledge was being questioned,

No need to be cocky or sarcastic.

I've given you plenty of good advice on how to improve your fishng without the moon and this is the appreciation I get?

Tell you what, you just do what you do, because clearly, you know better, even though you couldn't catch a fish in 8-10 sessions and admitted you only took this up last September but you know best, just like you know Autumn is the best time to catch Pike.

Ok cavemandom I don't think Andy was attacking you or being condescending he was just giving you his views on the matter as he sees it thats all !!
We all have different opinions on these things and i have to say i agree with Andy on moonphases only being part of the art of Watercraft

We have had this before with the mooncycle discussion and it got out of hand then Lets hope its not going to go the same way this time !!
So LETS keep it friendly please
