Starting Piking
Now that the weather is getting autumnal I have started getting twitchy about starting piking again. I haven't been since March. I was eyeing up the fish counter at the supermarket the other day too. I see Alex (Mr Makk) is going this weekend.
When do you guys get your piking underway?

Re: Starting Piking
i am a summer lure piker anyway but i always start to think about deadbaiting as sept/oct approaches. i am looking forward to trying a few new waters i have been eyeing up over the spring/ summer. one place looks really promising but is dodgy as **** because of where it is / nobheads that use the area as a general fly tip etc.
i reckon we are in for a hard winter again so personally i think the best piking is gonna be earlier than usual this year...get dusting off that tackle if u havent already

Re: Starting Piking
Like Tootall, I'm an all year rounder but concentrate on lures in the warmer months.
Tried my luck the other night whilst on the canal bream fishing and one came out with what looked like a fresh(ish) bite mark on it's flanks. As I'd took some deadbaits and my new rod, this gave me some hope but sadly no pike showed.
It's round about now that I start my piking sessions in earnest and will probably take my deabaiting gear along with me for more and more sessions, ultimately going soley over to piking in the late October/early November time.

It's jumper time Brrrrrrrrrrr
I have always lure fished throughout the year, but since starting 'bait fishing' last october with bazz, I have generally put it to the season(Oct - march) etc. but it's with the chill factor i'm starting to get fussy on weather or not to start deadbaiting. my local tackle shop(don't ask) has started to place order on deadbaits for the freezer, and I am starting to have that 'itch' on ether to start now or in the tradition season. i have chosen my conscious, my snap tackle is out and the deadbaits are beginning to number in my freezer.
Re: Starting Piking
i like to start dead baiting from oct 1st onwards, but must admit i sometimes get itchy and start end of sept

Re: Starting Piking
some good results already. Lets hope its a better year than last winter. It never recovered from the warm autumn and then the sudden frozen waters.

Re: Starting Piking
mr makk you can replace the eye
it will cost a few quid you need a new eye 2-3 quid at most
some thread any polyester will do (cotton is usually this now)
some epoxy poundland or world
and sharp blade and sandpaper

Re: Starting Piking
Will fish for pike all year round (lure fishing mainly in summer) but I like to start deadbaiting proper from September/October.
Can't wait to get the rods out...
