livebait rigs Empty livebait rigs

Post  tootall on Wed Oct 27, 2010 6:36 pm

traditionally i have always used two trebbles for my livebait traces- 1 in the dorsal area and 1 in the pectoral area.

after looking ata lot of livebait rigs for sea fishing i am thinking that 1 single hooked through the lip and a trebble on the flank may work better on two ways:
firstly for prolonging the life of the livie and secondly for better hooking/ unhooking properties.

Your thoughts please... Smile

like yourself i all ways hook from the tail to mid flank making sure not to pass the dorsal fin with the front treble .
although over time i,ve tried different hooking arrangements and i,ve tried using VB doubles and singles ,i,ve always seem to return to the traditional way of hooking

The only time i do hook a live with a single or a treble through the lips is when i,m free roving a live bait

Yes mate its a standard Snap Tackle but, with a smaller (8-10) single attached to the eye of the top treble with a small loop of power gum, It was developed by Eddie on the Trout waters where the Pike were clamping down on the Trout liveys rather than turning and taking them down like you would think, the idea being that you hook the bait on the single and the bottom treble leaving the top hook clear to penatrate.

I've used it myself on non Trout waters with decent sized Liveys and it works a treat.

I'll put a pic up tommorow evening if I don't forget mate.

There is no one way to hook a live mate I'll hook them on depending on the situation;

Free Roving; top hook in dorsal bottom one in pec root.

Paternostering; no flow/slow moving water i'll hook like a deadbait top hook in tail bottom just nicked in dorsal.
Med flow hook them as per free rover and mega flow hook them with the top hook in lip and bottom hook nicked in the dorsal root which is also how i'd hook them for Drifting or trolling.

And when legdering lives its head up in flowing water, head down in still water.

can we get back on track...if u look at my original question again, it was to do with there being any benefits or negative effects to using a big single hook as the lip hook rather than a trebble...

so far there's not been too many replies relating to that particular query...

the only disadvantage i can see in useing a big single is that in my opinion is ithink they are a lot easier to swallow resulting in deep hooking from time to time as a treble in my opinion that is as got more chance of getting caught up in the pikes mouth before it gets to the throut area i know you mentioned in conjunction with a treble in the dorsal which would cut down the chances of this happening Having tried single hooks in the past wasnt happy with the out come i think using trebles cuts down the risk by quite a bit and of course good bite indication Suspect

Obviously where ever you would normally hook the top treble on the bait, you hook the single.

so depending on the size of the live, you'd just use a longer band so it hooks nicely without too much tension?

when you say band do you mean elastic band might see a problem there mate Suspect
