Pike have had 200 million years to learn to recognise when something is in distress. A healthy bird paddling along is very rarely a target. As soon as the bird does anything erratic, it instantly becomes a target.
Look at livies. You can have a completely docile pike sitting among a shoal of roach, which it has no intention of eating. Hook one of the roach and bang!! The lateral line triggered a response in the pike that the pike probably wasn't even aware of.
The chicken on the rod, was simply a suitably-sized target that was giving off erratic signals.
That's why an erratically fished lure will out-fish a lure straight-retrieved in a predictable, monotonous, mechanical fashion almost every time.

what a nice vid, takes me back when i used to mess with anything on the top , just to see a pike strike, never bothered about hooking just obbserving pike do what they do BEST
