Sorry its not much good to you & people are overfishing it..... It becomes clearer & clearer to me why these forums have a 'no naming' policy Wink

I arrived at one of my favourite swims one day to find 2 tents, with 4 drunks all sound asleep inside. There were 8 rods in the water, none of which had an alarm or any form of indication. I'm talking Y-shaped sticks for rod-rests here. I'm amazed they still had rods on the bank. Any fish over 2lbs would have pulled them into 30 feet of water, never to be seen again. I was fuming. I wound all their rods in after trying to wake them, which didn't work. The 40 or so empty cans lying all over the bank probably had something to do with it. Just when I thought I couldn't be more annoyed, I then discovered they had chopped down a live silver birch tree, which obviously didn't burn. The annoying thing about that was the fact that less than 100 yards away, there had been a logging operation going on to rid the area of invasive fir trees. There was dead firewood lying everywhere but no, they just had to kill a perfectly healthy tree. I won't tell you what I then did because I'd probably find myself in some bother but this is a perfect example of why no venue policies exist. These nutters got that swim info. somewhere. Where, I do not know but I know one thing. They didn't get it from the locals.

Yes Andy. I PM'd Graham details of a water Nr. Scunthorpe...he knows the water, says somebody caught a 20lb Pike at this water & wrote an article about it which was sent to the Angling Times. Ever since the water has been 'hammered'. Embarassed

As long as you are properly prepared with plenty of multilayers to wear and warm flasks of food and drink along with some shelter such as a large umberella or a bivvy then you should be ok.

It also pays to use your common sense and have a fully charged mobile phone with you and let people know where you are going. If you move on then don't forget to let them know where you go to. If you can get somebody to go along with you for the session then that is even better. You can keep chatting and keep an eye on one another, watching for any warning signs that the weather is getting the better of you.

One tip for everybody to take note of, especially with the winter rapidly approaching:

If you cannot comfortable touch the tips of your thumb and little finger together (on the same hand) then you need to warm yourself up fast. This is the Inuit sign for 'OK' and if you cannot easily do it then you obviously are not OK.

Keep safe guys and girls.

Fascinating bit of survival lore there Lefty, which reminds me, I saw a cracking survival book in Oxfam the other day and I meant to go back and get it. It's full of tips like you just mentioned and I thought it should really be part of my fishing kit, because I normally fish in the Highlands. Get into trouble up there and you might not get found till Spring, so it's no joke.

I always have with me a small personal survival kit that contains the most basic of stuff required for a minimum of 24hr survival out in the wild.

It has 2 paracetamol, 2 ibuprofen, a whistle, mini LED torch, mini lighter, 3 matches (varnished) wrapped in cotton wadding and a swiss army type penknife. These are all on a carabeener that clips to my belt loop on my trousers. As I said, this goes EVERYWHERE that I go.

Now, I know some people will think I'm an idiot for doing that, but it takes up no room and could more than likely save my life and whoever is with me at the time.

I'm currently looking for the bits to make a more substantial kit that could support 4-5 people for a week to keep in the boot of my car.

I thoroughly recommend that my fellow forumers read up on basic survival skills, you won't regret it.

Once had a touch of Hypothermia Shocked

It was about 10 yrs ago. Went Cycling with a club group on a Sunday run, about a 50 miler at a very leisurely pace. It was March & probably about 8degreesC. Only wearing a pair of Lycra tights, summer cycling shoes, a hitec material short sleeve summer cycling shirt (noodle will know the material, it wick's sweat away) & a Pertex high viz light jacket. After two hours it rained & i got soaked & it was freezing. Eventually we got to Loughborough & all piled into a Cafe, run by Italian people & full of Italians. It was lovely & warm & there was a smell of great coffee. It was busy & there was a cue. Yours truly passed out & collapsed onto a table, knocking peoples coffee & cakes on the floor! I was lucky as there were 2 Paramedics, man & wife, there. I was wrapped in blankets & given tea with loads of sugar in to drink. I felt REALLY ILL! I was trembling uncontrollably. The Cafe owner came across & asked if i could give him a phone number to phone a friend or relative, so they could come by car to recover me. I was in such a state i couldn't talk at all. It was ages before i could give him my Dad's number. The Italians & fellow cyclists were fantastic and the paramedics were something else... The Club had a whip round & insisted on paying for the spilled coffee's. They wouldn't leave until my Dad arrived, risking cycling back to Nottingham late, in the dark. When my dad arrived, one of the cyclists told him "you want to see to it that your son understands what to wear in the cold". It took several hours for my body to recover & the shakes to go. I went a Club evening with that club & found out what to wear. This included several thin layers & a pair of neoprene overshoes. Also a neoprene balaclava type thing to wear under a Helmet.

Another article from Bazz, and a relevant one, don't get Hypothermia fishing in the cold and take Lefty's advice. Wink

Scary stuff Bazz, glad to hear you made a full recovery.

Just to show you all what I mean about the little survival kit I carry with me. Sorry for the poor picture quality.

The red canister contains the painkillers, the black one the matches and cotton wadding, the silver one is called a peanut lighter, gold coloured thing is the whistle, alongside that is the torch and the USB memory stick is just there to give some sort of scale. All these items have been purchased very cheaply (mainly online e.g. ebay and survival/outdoor centres) and I would strongly urge more people to take steps and prepare themselves for the unexpected.

When I get back I'll open a new post and give a list of survival sites I visit and some tips on what to do if you should find yourself in a situation.

Keep safe everybody.

As you can see, it's not very big at all and unobtrusive.

I don't think it's daft or soft at all. There's nothing funny about sending folk up to collect some numpty frozen to the side of a mountain or out to pluck some nutter from the drink etc. If you at least try to save yourself, the emergency (and very often voluntary) services won't have to go to the same lengths to save your life. I've seen folk fishing in denims and trainers in the middle of Winter in the Highlands.
One Easter, I met 4 Americans up at Rannoch Moor, who were wearing the flimsiest hiking gear you can imagine. Lycra leggings and lightweight multi-terrain type shoes etc. Now when I met them, the sun was blazing and they more or less laughed in my face for giving them fair warning that they could be asking for serious trouble and that nobody would relish going looking for them. I asked where they stayed, if they had left directions etc. and again, they poked each other in the ribs and basically tried to make me look daft for wearing as many clothes as possible under a Barbour jacket and gators etc. At the time, I was roasting. No doubt about it but 2 hours later, me and my mate got caught in a whiteout on the same moor and we very nearly died ourselves. Luckily we found shelter but I don't think there was anything remotely resembling a skinny bush on the route the Yanks were on. I actually had to walk 3 miles in the wrong direction to get to their hotel to let them know where these people might be because they hadn't returned. I assume they were OK but the fact of the matter was, the Hotel owner was livid at having to take action. At the time, I actually hoped for the worst, thinking "That'll teach them!" but there's nothing funny about it really.
If you fish anywhere remote, I think it sensible to have even a little survival knowledge. I'm not saying you should all become little Ray Mears wannabes running about skinning polecats for din-dins or anything but a few essentials could make the difference.

Beautiful, barren Rannoch Moor. I love staring at the moor from the warmth of the car on the A82. lol!

I certainly wouldn't want to get caught out in the middle of it even with the right gear on.

This is my favourite pic (Buachaille Etive Mor, Glencoe)
