Gripper for pike?
Hi,
Just got back from a fishing trip to Florida and was landing all my catches using a gripper. I found it really convenient and was useful when unhooking the fish.
I never see a gripper being used over here and was wondering what the reason for that is? Is it just a cultural thing or are grippers not suitable for a pikes mouth?
Planning on heading up to the River Lea tomorrow for the first time. Living in London, it's hard to find anywhere nearby to fish. Anyone been lure fishing up that way? Planning on taking a trigger rod with a selection of spinnerbaits that i was using for Largemouth Bass to see whether it works with pike. Will take my spinning rod as well and try a few lures and spinners.
Cheers

Thanks for your reply. Had a feeling that it might not be suitable hence why I asked without just going out and trying it.
It's funny because everyone in the US seemed to use them for all varieties of fish and it was seen as a standard thing. I've always used a landing net or my hand in the past and will continue to do so over here.

It's the idea that the heavier the fish, the more the pressure is applied between two very small points. Use a weigh-sling. Much nicer.

The one I was using in the states was a plastic one with "grip" points of about 1 cm in diameter rather than the smaller metal pincer ones you sometimes see. Still, with a pike, i can totally see that a gripper of any sort is not the way to go.
