fly size for pike
having been fishing for pike on the fly for a while now i have noticed that the size i am useing seems to be getting smaller started off with the big tinsel type of lure .These very big lures are not the easiest to cast but if you drop down a size maybe to a 3inch type zonker tpe you will find that extra distance and the presentation improves been using a floating line for most of my fishing with a six foot fluro leader 20lb with a 12 inch 20lb trace turns over just fine.Got myself some floating top water lures ready for the warmer weather.

thats interesting stubbo
this is probably really a stupid question to ask but is there a size limit to how small you could go or does particular patterns of flies determine the pike fly size ???

Re: fly size for pike
so the principal of size choice is down to the waters and bait fish in the water an angler chooses to fish on the day .
so the fundamental principal for the discipline of choosing fly size is really no different to either choosing lures for lure fishing and in relative terms bait fishing as well on waters
chosen
i,m just interested to know how anglers think who cross over there fishing from one discipline to another for a particular species ,as i don,t lure or fly fish which does limit my perspective of thinking to a point regardless of watecraft

and another facter is your casting ability, to much fishing not enough schooling some people use small so that it does,nt compromise presentation and they catch quite large fish but at the end of the day you can only catch what is in front of you or in the water.tackle tart wrote:so the principal of size choice is down to the waters and bait fish in the water an angler chooses to fish on the day .

i,ve been slowly listening and talking the the lure and fly boys over the last few months to try and gleen information which may be useful for me to make the transition in finally trying the discipline

my advice is to have a casting lesson muck well worth the money just to send you in the right direction pick somebody who know what they are doing so you dont pick up any bad habits and stick with ittackle tart wrote:yes they do the biggest i know of was a 19lb 6oz of the fens
