Spod rod for pike

I was tinkering with the idea of pickin up a spod rod to help send a bait that bit further
Can somebody recommend me with first hand experience a relatively cheap spod rod
Had a quick nose on the net but was looking for feedback from somebody who uses a spod rod for some of their piking

I use a Wychwood Rogue 4lb Spod (£45 but can bebought cheaper), with a Daiwa Emblem 5500, 15lb Daiwa Tournament mono, 40lb Amnesia shock, 4-5 oz leads to a paternoster. Superb bit of kit. Great for fighting pike too.

my mate uses a spod rod of about 5lb tc for me it is a tad stiff but he can wack out a very big bait when needed

A 5lb does seem a bit OTT for me, it would be a 4lb TC id be after I reckon.
Andy I think the Rogue is discontinued, I only found one place online that has one yeah its £45, Do you know of anywhere that has one cheaperr? Its been replaced by The Riot and is £60.
Andy can you describe how you like to set up your patenoster for long range - Is your weak link longer than the trace and lead then tied to the bait using PVA?

I've got an old Greys Carp rod, 2.75lb test curve but with a steely back bone. It can lob half a large mackerel + lead a good distance....

Almost. My link is longer than the trace and it's on a run-ring as per usual but I make mine out of the same shockleader material. If it was weak, you couldn't punch it out.

I just use a paperclip for attaching my lead on the end instead of the rotten bottom. Some people use casting clips and weak-links and allsorts of gubbins but I think the more complicated the rig, the more likely something will fail. Paperclip with a little PVA tape to keep it from opening on a full-on cast is plenty.

You can bind the lead and the bait together with PVA for the cast if you like but I prefer to give the lead a spin while it hangs and then when you swing the weight and the bait behind you for the cast, they splay apart and then the weight takes flight first, taking the bait behind it. Seems to work OK. The thickness of the shock material makes it pretty tangle free anyway.

I might add that I only ever use small baits and big leads. Some folk use spods for big baits with regular leads. If I'm using big bait, I use my 3.5lb rod and I cut back on the lead, with perhaps a few SSGs on the trace to help tighten up to. The bait is weight enough.

By the way...45 quid for the Rogue is pretty OK. Check the reviews for it via Google. It's well rated by carpers and pikers and many do use it as a normal rod, not just as a spodding tool.

It's a nice bit of rod for the cash. Put it this way, the Rogue Pike range started out at the same price and they're now 75 and 80 quid and I'd even suggest the Spod is a far nicer rod. I'm glad I got the 3.5lb Rogue Power Pike and the 4lb Spod. Brutal tools for brutal fish on brutal big waters.

Nope. Just the same as running leger rig only with a long piece of shock material coming off my run-ring.

Dunno how well paternoster booms stand up to brutal casts with big leads. The eyelet seems a little flimsy to me. I might be wrong though. Check Dave Lumb's 'Sprat In The Bag' rig. That incorporates a paternoster boom and it's not often Dave's wrong.

I don't have any rods larger than 3lb t/c. And my rods are a little on the old side so I can't give you any first hand experience. But I have noticed that there are lots of budget rods out there. Whatever you go for, look at one in a shop first. If it seems too good to be true and feels cheap then it will be.

I use a Nash Hooligun spod rod for carping and have often thought it would be a good pike rod for big bait use,think its a 4lb test curve and i picked up a second hand one for £25 so they aint too dear either

I came across a 13ft wychwood solace rod 3.5tc it also has a 50mm butt ring

maybe not. It could well throw a lead a fair way, but it may not like the extra weight a bait brings into the cast. and why would a 50mm butt ring help(dont fall for the hype the extra 10mm over a 40 may help a top end caster add a yard or two, for the normal caster all it means is you have a bigger bit of ceramic thats easier to break)

i use a 13 3.5 from shimano for small baits and big leads, for big baits i use a through actioned fox piker to lob them

paddy its all in the way the blank is produced,, most carp style casting rods have a stiff but and softer tip, youthen load the tip and keep the but straighter, giving you a longer lever to throw with and add to that the tip recovers faster propelling the lead faster, hence further

spod rods (like pike rods to a degree) have slower tapers which helps with casting heftier weights

as for beach rods they fall into the former category if its a casting one, most cheaper ones though are slower tapered. and a lot of the cheap ones are very cheaply made.

if your throwing one of the little gardner spods then you can use 2.5's. But you wouldnt use a 12 ounce spod on one
