wire trace for perch. yes or no?

Post  MAD BAD ANGLER on Fri Dec 19, 2008 8:36 pm

hi guys. just wanted to as for some advice about spinning for perch. i have read in books that it is best NOT to use a wire trace for perch, as the lure has a better action, ans using lighter line say 5lb-6lb will also catch more fish. here's my dilemma, the waters i fish all have a good head of pike in them, if i'm spinning for perch i have a good chance of hooking them, but not of landing them without a trace. i dont want to leave a pike with a lure in it, but i do want to get a nice perch if poss. does a trace affect your perch catches that much? is there a better alternative than using a wire trace? let me know your thoughta please guys. all the best.

Hi MBA i dont think theres a alternative to a trace !!

I wouldn't recommend spinning for perch without a trace on any water unless you are 100% sure theres no pike at all !!

I dont think a trace makes that much difference to the action of the lure anyway santa

Contact Anglers Rendezvous in Glasgow. They do a 24lb 49 strand available by the metre that is ideal for perch or discreet pike fishing. It's brown, very thin, supple, knotable and crimpable (dunno how it twists...never tried) but I use it anywhere that has pike in there along with the perch and it makes no difference to my catch rate that I can see. Great stuff and worth investing in. It's slightly more expensive than most wires but it is for a very specific application but it's very hard to kink or damage so it's lifespan is excellent.

PS: The shop is moving in January but if you call them now, they'll give you the details of their new premises.

Yallreet Mad Bad,

Ive recently been targeting the perch on the Canal in Thorne and have been using my usual lure setup with trace and all.
Had some fantastic perch over 3lb ALL on a 7cm Floating RT Salmo Slider as recommended by Andy.
Never had anywhere near that size before and they just keep coming. It must be down to these lures coz if I change it the fish stop.
If you want the location I can PM you mate. Youll know where it is. santa

Regards, Chumley
