Budget Rod/Reel? Empty Budget Rod/Reel?

Post  Chumley Warner Mon Dec 15, 2008 9:48 pm

Yallreet Folks,

Need some help in buying a new rod/reel for lure fishing.

Being a student Im pretty poor but want a good setup for the heavyweight jerks such as the big salmo pike, slider, etc. My current lure rod is a cheap shakespeare at 3m with a cast weight of 20-60gm. Im told by the guys at my local shop that this is not enough, too long, etc.

Any recommendations for a cheap rod that would be suitable for all my jerking needs would be appreciated. Up to £50 is about as much as my missus would allow right now. Same goes for the reel.

Cheers, Chumley

I don't think 50 quid is going to do it for you mate. You could pick up a rod for 20 quid that would be more than adequate but you will need a decent multiplier like an Abu 5601 (35 quid from Ebay US) and you'll have to load that with braid which isn't that cheap either.
Jimmy was selling some lures on the sales forum. I've asked if he's selling a lure outfit too but failing that, I'll keep my eyes open for a budget setup but in all honesty, I think you'll have to think about doubling your budget for the kinds of lures you're thinking about throwing.
keep looking and keep asking for opinions. We'll keep you right mate.

I meant £50 for the rod and another £50 for the reel, or there abouts. Either way my budgets about £100 for the two. Got 300yds of 40lb Power Pro braid off ebay US other day for about £20 so thats sorted as is all the other bits and bobs. Im ok on the smaller stuff with my current setup but didnt want to overload it with the great big uns Ive just bought.

Cheers for the help mate

Looks good mate, will go with the Max 4 coat and trousers Im not supposed to know santas fetching me. santa

The reel Im using for my lures at the moment is an Okuma Travertine, was only £16 but its stood some good hammer and they all come with a 5 year guarantee. Think I might have to invest in one. Ill go off in search of a "buy it now".

Ah right 100 quid changes everything and the fact you have 40lb braid is a start, for the lighter lures anyway. You will have to step up eventually but you can always use the 40lb line for bait fishing later. I'll ask my mate where he gets the cheap Abus from in the US. I've used them and they're the real (or is that reel?) deal. Proper Swedish marked Abu 5601s and 6501s. He might have some ideas for rods too. He's got some really nice St.Croix and Abus etc for peanuts. Believe it or not, Fladen also do some really good baitcasting rods. Their reels aren't up to much but the rods are well up to the job. Like I say though, give me a few days to track down my mate and gather some info. for you.

STOP LOOKE HERE 30 quid and top rods too
http://www.climaxtackle.com/nash/jerk_rods.htm

well with postage 38 quid go fr the heavier models though the 7 footer is fine for smaller lures but lacks the backbone to set big hooks

as for reels may i buck the trend and point you in the direction of either the shimano corsair (very smooth but not quite as durable as my other choice) or the penn 940 levelwind absolute bombproof bit of gear but not the smoothest in the world it will happily chuck hefty lures all day, not quite as far as the shimano but it doesnt need half the maintainance the shimano does

both of these can be found for under 50 quid and the penn sometimes can be bought factory reconditioned for 30 quid or so

na then wayne if its a multiplyer ur after whickersley angling centre have got a good combo deal on at min . u get a diawa multiplyer one of those new ones with the twiching bar on and a wichwood 6' 6" jerkbait rod which can throw a 5 ounce lure i believe and its loaded with braid for £99. sounds just up ur street. although they do have a website the deal is not on there u'll have to nip down to have a look. if u buy them seperate it works out about £140 .
failing that mate you can get a john wilson six shooter rod n multiplyer £50 for both at bennets in sheffield.

the daiwa reel although not bad may be a tad small for either you or hefty jerkbaits daiwa do one that fits the bill nicely and i forgot about it earlier pop onto neville ficklings shop site has he has them in and have a look.

six shooter no no no no no no no no no dont do it you will end up regretting it the reel is dire and the rod is more suited to perch than pike it only cast up to about an ounce
the super shooter reel though is useable if on the small side

Been reading this thread with interest study

Recently got a spinning rod for Xmas (Santa Wife Very Happy )

This is it:

Masterline Phd (Powerhead) - 9ft, 15-30g casting weight.
Budget Rod/Reel? Bf10dafphdspin

Got a free Fladen reel with this .......but will use my Abu loaded with braid, and use the Fladen loaded with mono on my 11ft rod for dead baits. (that's the plan)

Now......the rod was aboot £40...........I only got it cos I know that my 11ft rod is a wee bit cumbersome for spinning. (yet I've caught double figure pike with it)
I've also caught double figure pike on a "Lidle" £10 telescopic rod with 10lb mono.

Do we live in an age where tackle and expense dictates what we "should" be doing?

I don't consider myself to be a young angler......but I am new to the game.
I don't consider myself to be an old angler......cos I'm not aware of tackle before I started fishing.

But what I am aware of is the multitude of gear on offer oot There and I'm bemused by it all Shocked

I've yet to give my new rod an outing......but I'm guessing that I will catch some pike with it. Whether or not it is the "right" tool for the job.

I may be missing something here with weights of lures etc.......but the bottom line for me is the ability to catch pike. This is something I truly believe....in my limited knowledge.......is more to do with location than it is to do with tackle/expense.

Sorry if i've ranted a wee bit in here.........but I stand by everything I've said/typed Very Happy

very true

may i pos a couple of scenarios for you though,

1st you have found a top spot and are getting plenty of follows etc but no takes, along i walk throwing big lures (thinkabove 8 inch nd weighing upwards of four ounces I (luckily fo me) absolutly empty the bit of water youve been on, is location the end all and be all then or would having a balanced set up that allowed me to give the fish what they want?

reverse it im on monster jerks and the fish are fry feeding imwasting my time

you are right you wont catch what isnt in front of you, and without the right approach you may well blank too

personally i have nothing against cheap gear i use very little that could be claimed to be overly expensive, however i have lots of different set ups to cover many eventualities and yes i can understand not everyone wishes to or in some cases may be able to do this, its why i try to advocate the use of gear that is readily available and not overly pricey, ok the odd exception may be thrown in things like dlst rods or some of the more exotic lures etc but they are very much in the minority

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo......avoid the JW sharpshooter combo like the plague. The rod is OK-ish but it's a single handed pistol-grip, which is hard to use and the reel is best for sorting wobbly table legs.

I think that in this scenario I would simply move location. I'm very lucky to stay in close proximity to aboot 5 lochs. I think that reading this first scenario......that it is probably more to do with my location rather than the fish's location....Very Happy

I know mate........that you have nothing against "cheap" gear. I really do think that my personal location has a huge bearing on my point of view on this. If I moved and found myself having to search loads of local spots......then the gear may come into play. But I return to my original point..........is it us as modern-day fishermen that put a huge emphasis on tackle in order to compensate for our inability to find the spot where the fish are? We lie back and put our faith in spending more to ultimately "overcome" the problem of the demon blank and have a good days sport......when we should really be able to get mobile and catch fish with a little more physical effort than pure wallet power. After all.......fishing for pike can involve some fairly basic methods.......it is the tackle market that dictates "what we should be doing in the form of lures, traces, floats, rigs etc...

.....Ithink that forums like this help to undermine the tackle stockist and iopen up dialogue between people who are actually oot there ......catching fish Wink

Toight as fook lines mate......toight as fook Cool

There are loads of cheap but quality outfits out there. The Wychwood rods are good as are some of the Fladen lure rods and as I've said before, you can buy Abu reels via Ebay US for 35-40 quid brand new.
I'm still keeping my eyes open though. If I see something you might be interested in, I'll make sure you all know about it.

I've recentley sold all my heavy lures (6oz+) they're knackering to chuck & i found it made no difference to the size of pike i was catching.I've down sized my jerk outfit to a nash jerk 6'6'' & a 5501c3.But that means i've a 6501c3 for sale.Just been serviced by the abu surgeon general himself peter coogan,So it's like new.

Try putting it in the 'For Sale' section of the forum, Joel.
I have recently bought an 8' lure rod myself with intentions of doing a bit of lure fishing, i may be interested myself, i'm kicking the idea around as i write this.... Cool
