Hi All, new pike fisher here
Hi all, I have been fly fishing for all trout, mainly wild brownies for the past 15 or more years now. Sometimes fish for Salmon (when I can afford too) lol. Now that the season is drawing to an end, i have decided to take on Pike fishing. When I was a young kid I used to fish the canals for jack pike using a spinner, but nothing really serious. I have kitted myself out with a basic pike rod and baitrunner, and have all the neccessary tackle etc.
I am off to Loch Ard this weekend to try my luck, and wondering if any of you guys had any tips for me, or previous experiences at location. I will be using dead bait lampray/mackarel or such, and taking an extra rod for lure fishing, as i get bored easy lol
Thanks

Have to drive right round the back of Ard, along the firepath and even then, the gate might be locked, which can be a pest. You can also fish just past the Post Office, on the strip of grass. A few fish have come off there. Nothing clever about tactics. Just running leger rigs at various distances.

Went to the ard. Beautiful water indeed. I fished the south side of the loch, through all the woods, up crazy little roadS (wish i took my 4x4) lol and found a super little spot. Near Milton car park, looked perfect a bit shallow though. And I never caught anything . However it was a great day out to test new gear and get a better feel for it. Got told people where catching up at the school area, but couldnt find it.
Going to the venichar this weekend (saturday) I believe up at drum farm?marsh area is pretty good just now? So going to give it a bash.
I bought a cheap pike rod (starter one) and this thing was like holding 1tonne of lead pipe lol, so maybe going to buy the Shakespeare Odyssey Pike Rod, as its only £40 and seems decent, not sure of best reel to accompany it?

Big waters like rivers canals and big lakes / lochs are ok as long as you don't name spercific areas and members should reply by pm

Re: Hi All, new pike fisher here
Another Question I would like to ask is : Rigs I have been using has a running weight, however when I cast this I dont get a good distance due to the weight going one way and that bait going other, to combat this would I use a heaver weight than bait? I also want to try the "wobbler" techinique without weight, and also try the poppermaster rig? with fixed weight longer than bait trace ?
