Re: smart agressive pike???
hi i have had the same sort of thing on a lake i fish time to time, a real fast bite flying off with line with no resistance as would happen when piking but when i struck into it there was nothing and my deadbait had no marks in it. after talking to another keen piker on the lake hes had the same problem and he puts it down to eels that cant get the whole bait in there mouth in one go and not hooking them. maybe bearing in mind fella

i would agree it could be eels,we had the same in summer this year mega runs but nowt ther but when we did hook them they were decent eels...and those who say eels dont get caught in winter are wrongpopupfish.finger wrote:hi i have had the same sort of thing on a lake i fish time to time, a real fast bite flying off with line with no resistance as would happen when piking but when i struck into it there was nothing and my deadbait had no marks in it. after talking to another keen piker on the lake hes had the same problem and he puts it down to eels that cant get the whole bait in there mouth in one go and not hooking them. maybe bearing in mind fella

was your rod pointing at the spot or line coming from rod tip at an angle ?

I had a couple of fast runs on Saturday, bloody coots, I saw the first one dive down for it but didnt notice the second one later on, I ran to the rod all excited and struck and the coot surfaced

I remember a good few year ago I was fishing a Drain (Wallers Haven) and I had a couple of similar sorts of runs as you describe, each time though my baits were bit in half, I was very puzzled, then a few hours later I saw a Mink and put it down to him. Possibly could be the same problem where you were.
