ive just started to pop up my deads with the fox red ball type. ive never ever caught a pike on a pop up, so this year i thought i,d give it a good go. visually i thought they would be irresistable as the pop ups are red and i also use the fox red flappy tag thingy do da's you put on the hooks for extra presence. cant think what they are called !!

no takes up to now, but i keep trying. all my pike seem to come from the bottom.

anyone had good success with popped up baits and what size pike did you catch using this method ?

I use popped up deads over bottom weed, but instead of the red fox (expensive) balls I use poly eggs purchased from the hobby shops around easter time. My best fish from a popped up half herring was 120cm from snout to tail. (was caught in Belgium and they measure instead of weighing most of the time). I will only use a bottom bait if the bed is clear.

yep, they are a bit pricey Matt. i do have polystyrene balls in the box, and i could always paint them i suppose, but i just cant be arsed !! lol! lol!

i like the idea of the hobby eggs though. will look out for them nearer Easter. cheers. Very Happy

i catch alot of pike on popped up baits using fox poppers fished 18"to 2' off bottom i use the poppers on a 2'lenght of braid tied to my bottom treble.i now use wine corks to pop baits up cheaper than fox poppers and fished with 3oz lead

I always have at least one bait popped-up. I've had numerous fish to over 20lbs on pop-ups.

i fit the pop up ball with wire, threaded through the bait with baiting needle and tied to the bottom treble. pop up in front of the baits mouth in otherwords. so the bait is head upwards. with a red pop up like that, it really gives great visual presentation. Very Happy

what happens to the polystyrene once youve had a take? can you get it back or does it crumble up or float off ?

Ehh up dougie m8

Ifish pop ups same way as you m8 and had some very nice fish, dont bout you m8 but takes seem to more violent when popped up aswell.

Have you tried the fox bait popper stems there realy easy to use and make presentation really neat, you can get extended ones for making kebabs m8 aswell.

Theres the prowler ones aswel m8 but tend to find you need bigger baits for these

hiya Leebob.

ive used deadbait sticks in the past. the ones which slip inside the bait. still havnt caught on them though.

ive just looked at your link. i still prefer to use the red fox pop up balls i think. from a visual presentation, they look superb and it gives the pike something to really home in on.

i do use big baits sometimes. ive used 1 1/2lb trout before now, but obviously laying on the bottom. ( and ive caught on them ) weirdly, the pike ive had to huge baits havnt been that big ( mid to late doubles ). its bloody exciting though when you get a take on a bait that size. you think its gonna be Jaws !!! ( i can here the music now !! ) lol! lol! lol!

Fox poppers and balsa inserts must be put on a trace as (above) then usally clipped onto your treble's eye
so you get them back..leaving shite in your bait is bad practice Smile
