I would like to introduce myself and ask a few questions as well.
I just arrived to UK, from Lithuania. I am a member of spinning fishing club there, so not a newbie in fishing world.
I know that rules are different in every country, so I better get to know them before I get in trouble Smile . I was exploring internet a lot, but still have not found all the answers. I will appreciate if you answer them...
1] I need the general license, that is ok. But if I reach a pond, and see absolutely no signs about licenses/owner/etc, may I consider that the fishing there is free?
2] Thames - is it free, owned by clubs in certain banks, or?... [I live in Southeast London by the Thames]
3] Other rivers?
4] Can I take fish home, if decide to have a fresh dinner?

Thanks a lot.

welcome m8.

i can answer a few questions you asked.

Yes, you need a License no matter where you fish and must carry it with you at all times. It is an offence not too and you risk going to Court.

If you do find a "pond" or river with no signs / owners about do not assume that its ok to fish it. Do your homework first. There are plenty of places offering Day / syndicate tickets for you to fish Legally !

NO YOU CANT TAKE FISH HOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. No offence intended but its the Eastern Europeans who are starting to spoil the fishing in this country because they do take the fish home, which is Illegal in this Country. Please abide by our rules if you intend to fish here.

I dont know about fishing in London though, as i dont live there. Hope this helps a bit anyway.

Welcome to the forum Geddie, And you have my respect for trying to find out what is right and what is wrong about going fishing, I help Bailiff the club waters we have in the north west and to be honest when people were comeing in at first from eastern europe they just took it for granted they could fish where and when they wanted, But we put 6 EU lads in charge of sorting out there own people so we didnt have to start taking them to court, Ok they have done a great job and the club now recognises them as members and we have around 80 or so and they are good fishermen and respect the club rules right down to having the correct equipment, We still have a small problem with new comers and not just from the EU, But once we call in one of the 6 guys they are sorted and hopefully become members,
But well done on you for joining the forum and asking questions,
As for the thames, You do need a rod Licence, But if you are near the Sea and the water is tidal you can normaly fish it for free as you can from any beach on the our coast, You can also take fish home as long as they are in size, If you are planning on going inland then you need the land owners permision to fish there and the restrictions come into force where you can not take the fish home,
Hope this is of help Geddie,
All the best for the new year mate,
Very Happy ,,,Paddy,,, Very Happy
