Ive always used size 8, but from what Ive been reading most people seem to use size 6, I cant see any advantage of using a bigger hook surely the smaller the better

Post  doug6364 on Thu Jan 05, 2012 8:37 pm

i use mostly 4's and 6s'. semi barbed of course. 4's when using half a mack size bait , 6's for smelt etc about that size. works for me. Very Happy

if i use a huge bait, then i will use size 2's.

I use size 6 owners for ma deadbaiting. But I use partridge hooks for my livebaiting these are size 4 which are the same size as size 6 owners. Ive used 8's for Zander but never needed to use anything bigger or smaller.

4s all the way. Let's face it, a pike's mouth might be 12+ inches long and the width??It's a pretty big mouth to be putting size 8s in.

I also don't trust the strength of anything less than 6s, having had several size 4s bent well out of shape or even snapped.

I think the problem with the bigger hooks is they do get snapped or twisted and i think its just down to the quality, I would say 1 in every 20 gets mangled, But it is useualy a good sized fish that helps them get like that Shocked
And some of those beasties you catch Andy the mouths are that wide you could just put a pair of shoes in them so they are going to munch on a hook or two Very Happy
