HOOK SIZES ON LURES

Post  matt859 on Mon Jan 09, 2012 11:39 am

Why do the hooks on lures seem to big? Ive just had a delivery of new toys to play with and the hooks look massive compared to those I use to tie my deadbait traces.

I think depends on lure size or type & because hooks have to be big enough not to be masked by the lure when the fish hits it, allowing it to hook immediately and not gain any leverage from the lure body helping to dislodge them.

On a live or dead bait trace the hooks will often pull free from the bait when you tighten up to the pike as it moves off with the bait inside it's jaws, I know this doesn't always happen but natural baits are soft too. I often put smaller hooks on, or ones with thinner gauge wire, especially on soft plastic lures because as you say some lures come dressed in some very over the top hooks, especially those big singles which protrude from the back of some lures.
