So live baiting, how do you guys go about getting live bait, do you catch them at the venue or take your own in?

If you catch them on the day, how do you go about it, take a whip and a few rigs or use a waggle rod?

I wanna live bait but I also wanna go with as lighter tackle is possible!

First thing to note is that it"s illegal to transfer live baits from one water to another.
For me it"s a 4mtr tele whip.A couple of rigs made up to fish to hand, the floats are always small porqupine quills shotted with No 8s.
I find this set up very versatile, yes it has it"s limitations but works for me on most venues.

Yeah I know it illegal to transfer from venue to venue but I did read on here that someone was wanting goldfish to live bait with...

My only problem is I've taken a 7 mtr stroker kit from an expensive pole I've got and not had a single bite, ended up dead baiting Sad

To introduce ANY live fish without thr relevent E A authorisation is illegal.
As for catching livies,Even the best match anglers in the country don"t catch every visit mate.
I nearly always plan my trips so that deadbaits are my main line of attack,If a few livies can be caught, I consider this a bonus and an extra option.

Also do you use mags, pinkies and/or worms?

My prefered bait is always maggot, but if perch are about a small worm scavenged from under a rock will often get you a bait, and on canals punch and a bit of liquidised bread will often do the job.

When i have used livvies in the past i caught them on a whip with simple float set up. That was at Wroxham where you can catch bait on animal tactics. 4lb line, 16 hook, single maggot, and you can pull out 5 - 6 oz roach all day.

Easy peasy, but i have struggled to catch elsewhere in the past !

Lol nice reply!!!

I'm a competent course fisherman thanks, fished any many local matches ect... and done well at times.
Cos it's the winter and I like to fish for pike, I though I would try live baiting for the first but because I want to travel as light as possible I decided to ask on here.

If you've nothing constructive to add to a thread then politely go away... Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Looks like i'll have to take catching live bait a lot more seriously...

luckily the venue where i go sells the livvies there so you can buy them at the hut never done it before will try it soon tho,but when just coarse fishing for carp etc i sometimes just use a 2bb float and hook to nylons so thats nothing to carry if travelling light all will fit in one pocket either sweetcorn or maggots on the hook and always am pulling the little silvers out Very Happy
