I make a few bits of gear myself from floats to electronic dropoffs and often source bits from other than tackle shops i.e. beads and chenille from sewing outlets, shrink tube from maplins, stiff rig tube for dumbbell rigs from decathlon.
Do you guys have any good(money saving)tips to pass on.

Cant say that i know of money saving tips Hurricane, but i do enjoy making stuff. Pike floats in all shapes and sizes and drop off indicators ive made in the past. cheaper ? probably not but got a lot of satisfaction from making them though.

Its easy Tom.

Get some balsa dowel, 15mm or 20mm dia, maybe 6 - 7 inches long ? Round off the ends with sandpaper, then make a hole through the middle and put some stiff tube through, paint with Humbrol paints, black or green on the bottom, luminous orange on the top. ( prime with white first to get the orange to "glow" properly, thats what i found ).

Or, same length and dia, but with a loop of 2mm galv wire pushed into the bottom and glued in place. Fit a splitlink with swivel onto loop and you have a great pike float ( not weighted as those can cause deep hooking ).

Its great fun. Once youve mastered those, the worlds your Oyster mate.

Meant to say, the floats with hole through the middle are great for livvies or deads, the bottom fixed ones i only use for deads.

Heres a couple of easy to make floats.
The bigger one is a pollyball with a qtip pushed throug the middle(ends cut off of course) and painted.(optional)
The smaller one is a bit of stiff rig tube pushed through a fox popper with a bit of rig tube and a swivel for attatchment.
The pollyball I use for free roaming livies and the small one for zander fishing on the canals.
The starlights are again optional.

Tom, here are some floats that i made probably 15 - 20 yrs ago as i described above. Nothing special, but still going strong. Great fun to make.

The ones with hole through middle i use for livvies or deads and are 16mm dia, ones with the loop i use for deads are 12mm dia. Attach those with a link swivel onto the loop. I made those very slightly weighted, but not enough to completely stand them up otherwise you can get a deep hooked pike with fully loaded as a pike could pick up the bait and sit there and you wouldnt know.

Here"s a tip for the deadbait pencils, put a white band of paint in the middle and Araldite a swivel in each end you then have 2 floats for the price of 1 for different light conditions Cool

The pollyball has accounted for loads of pike and a 35lb cat cost about 10p to make. Cool

ahh the good old broom handle, pretty usefull bits of kit. Ive got two water rat lures I made when I was a youngster that were made out of broom handle.

I will take some pics of my home made stuff and pop them up in the next few days.

Your idea with the swivel Hurricane is soooooo much better than my wire loop. Must have had a brain storm when i made them up.

Be interesting to see those lures Matt, and anything else youve made.

Tom, you need stiff rig / boom tube in long lenghths. should find it with no probs. Thats what i used.

Just a touch of Araldite mate does the job. Just leave a few mm of tube protruding either end and smooth glue around, then paint it. Blow through the tube to clear it after sliding through. Simples. Very Happy

Also, to make the hole in Balsa, i think i used a long skewer or something similar. Just kept turning it slowly.
