Hi Nickcarpy
I,ve used 4 rods for the best part of 20 years, only ever had 2 rods go close together. But on a few occasions trying to set up multy rods, one goes off as you cast second in,unhook fish, recast first rod second rod goes,ect,ect... on these rare occasions you can only fish one rod safely, but have another rod baited and waiting(had to leave all rods out to get a cuppa). This has only ever happened around spawning time.

Re: multiple rod set ups.
Two rods is all I tend to use when bait fishing as I try to be mobile and need to keep the weight down. I have used 3 occasionally though, usually when I plan to be in situ for a while although this is rare.
The majority of my fishing at the moment is one rod lure fishing.

I use just the one rod with a deadbait on and in the water, and sometimes use a lure rod in between catches.
It's mainly cos I tend to travel light and also I don't like the idea of trying to land 2 fish together.

3-4 rods and very occasionally a lure/wobbling rod in there for good measure. Dealing with multiple runs shouldn't be a problem. It's not about landing 2 fish at once. If you have a fish on and another rod goes, you open the bail-arm or switch the baitrunner on, put the rod back in the rests and then go and set the hooks on the other rod. Setting the hooks to avoid deep-hooking is the problem. Once you've set the 2nd set of hooks, you do the same again, open the bail-arm/baitrunner, put the rod down and go and deal with the FIRST fish, land it, photograph and weigh it if need be and then go and deal with the second or 3rd or even 4th fish.
It's not about banking more than one fish at a time. Deal with one fish at a time but make sure you always set the hooks ASAP.

i use 2 rods for deadbaiting and a third for lure fishing. on occasion i have had both deadbaits go at once and if you are fishing alone then follow the above advice andy posted to the letter..... if not alone then its easy lol, just get your mate to handle the other fish
