Never fished the Trent but I gather it's a big, powerful river. I use 2.25tc rods on the Ribble and I need that much power. The Ribble's fast and powerful too with a great many rocks and loads of snags so 15lb line is needed for the barbel. I doubt that the make od rod is at all important but I would go for a reasonably heavy one.

I use Shakespere Mach 2 XT Barbel rods and have had barbel up to 10lb on the lighter quiver tip. The heavier 1.75 test tips ive used to take carp of the top to 19lb and felt totally in control with both tips, really cant fault them whatsoever, and i believer their only £45, look pretty nice too!
