hi,my mate was using single hookslast week on the trent with deadbaits, they were working fine,so i was thinking of making a couple up for this friday, ive just bought some size 4/0 hooks and was thinking of twisting trace to a split ring then putting hook on that, any views before i make them up would be most welcome,on use of splitring / hooksize etc, mark

i'd just dispense with the splitring and twist the hook directly to the trace personally mate.
hooksize will probably be about right i think.
i should just point out that i personally just stick to the conventional 2 size 6 trebles and although i keep thinking about trying singles i havent done so yet..... but i would probably rig up the same if i was to try them

I use singles all the time and just twist direct to the hook eye.

You're right about the unhooking - it's an absolute doddle aint it?

I use barbless or crushed barbs except when using 2 hooks. In that situation my top hook is left barbed and a smaller hook than the lower one. This is so the hook can hold into the tail root of the bait fish to aid easier casting. With the hook being smaller, it is usually a case of just having to extract the one lower (and larger) hook.

I use 1 single hook when fishing at short range so it's just a gentle (usually underarm) cast and see no need in using a barbed hook as you rarely get it flying in the opposite direction to where you want it to go Very Happy

single hooks i cant say much about them as ive only used this method once or twice,, all i can say is im a firm believer in trebles, pike have a lot of teeth and not the easiest prey to get a hook hold on so for this reason i use trebles everytime,,,, i think it"ll take a cupple of dropped runs and you will change to the treble method but if your going to stay with the singles then good luck

Hi there Mark. I don't really know the size of hooks because I scrounged them Very Happy I think the large one is a size 2/0 and the smaller one is about as long as my thumbnail and is a dedicated carp hook from what I believe. Sorry that I can't be more specific.

Anyway, I attach the larger one to a length of trace using the method described in the following link:

http://www.foxint.com/articles.php?lang=&article=48

It is an excellent, easy and strong method that has never failed me.

I then slide the smaller hook onto the trace and secure it using a short length of silicon tubing that leaves the hook a tight sliding fit so as to accommodate varying sizes of bait. Then attach a swivel to the other end of the trace. Finished trace should be an absolute minimum of 15" but preferably longer.

Sorry for the poor quality image!

Using the larger bottom hook first, I insert it into the skin roughly halfway along the flank of the bait fish (not too deeply) and then back out again (shank pointing towards the tail end). Then the smaller hook goes through the bony root of the tail and with it being barbed gets a good grip if done correctly (through the bone).

When you are done, the bait will be hanging upside down when you pick up the trace at the swivel end and the larger hook will be no lower than the dorsal fin.

Look here for a bit more info on single hook rigs:

Hope this helps you.

Hi there MBA.

On my single hook rig, I use a size 2/0 for something like a herring or a size 4 for a smelt, sprat or joey mackerel.
Tag rig, a size 4.
A 'double single' rig I use the size 2/0 at end of trace and the size 4 for the upper hook.

Hope this helps.

this is the way i do it and it worked for me
single hooks Picture004-3
single hooks IMG_0238
single hooks Picture006-1
single hooks Picture002-3
single hooks Picture003-2
as u can see i used sprat bait hooked in the eye socket but i tested this first with another sprat to make sure it would pull out easy to help with hooking and it worked like a dream used it on float had the bait suspended and not on the bottom nice hook hold and a doddle to take out this is only my second go with single hook and bth times ive never had problems with it ive also had a couple on single treble aswell i like the method because its a doddle for the unhooking Very Happy to be honest its mainly about confidence in your rigs i find ive alot of confidence in this method but if i was using sardines or bigger baits ledgered id probably use the double trebble just for the size of the baits

There is a good wobbling rig in the current Anglers Mail. It uses a single at the front & a treble two-three inches further back. Put the single through the lip of the bait & bury the treble into its flank.......sorted! Very Happy

They recommend a supple bait such as a Smelt or freshwater deadbait eg.. a Dace etc.. NOT Mackerel or Sardine! The Macky is too stiff & the Sardine will break up lol! tongue
