if poss i try to chin pike. i think it does less harm to the fish, and you don't have to worry about your hooks getting stuck in the net. if you are new to pike fishing though, id wouldn't try it yet, wait until you have a bit more confidence.

As a novice you should always use a landing net to land your pike. Hand landing a pike is a tricky skill to master without putting yourself and the fish at risk. If you are happy release the pike without weighing or a photograph it then you could unhook it in the water, in which case hand landing is fine. If you want to take it out of the water then stick to using a net but be aware of the flying hooks. Lures will easily snag in a net and pike caught with a lure can be better unhooked in the water, but this can be quite dangerous as you might get a hook in your hand. It would be a good idea to invest in an unhooking glove for these occasions. Rubber coated landing nets could be a good answer as they won't snag the hooks like a normal net.

Have you had a look at this article on the website www.pikeangler.co.uk/pike-unhooking-gear/ It has quite a bit about landing nets and othe essential gear.

net or hand pike them out? Empty to chin or not to chin

Post  stubbo Fri Sep 14, 2012 10:05 pm

i like to lift the small ones out by hand but for safety reasons i like to net doubles and bigger fish and if the hooks do get snagged in the net i just cut them with the fox heavy duty wire cutters takes no time at all.....like i have mentioned in a earlier article some people think chinning pike does them harm....the big girls are more prone to damage because of the shear wieght of being lifted by there heads and not being properly supported around the belly area.....

Always a net for me for the same reasons as Stubbo states.

Plus I don't like the possibility of getting a hook embedded in one of my pinkies. Ouch! Crying or Very sad

I prefer chinning them out myself. It's very rare for me to require the use of a net and even then it's usually a reach problem.

From what I can gather, the evidence about the weight of the fish/organs thing seems to be fairly anecdotal rather than scientific but supporting a fish with 2 hands is reasonable practice I think.

its also only troutwater fish that everyone goes on about, wonder why chew is still producing repeats then Razz

hands for me id sooner be in control of the fish from the off much the same as andy, if i cant reach em then its net time, also i find larger fish easier to hand land the small ones cause all the problems so i generally tail them
