The e.a have now decided to tag pike in order to find out why they are in decline ?? Rolling Eyes
I would of thought it would be easier to check sales on disposable barbeques from supermarkets or maybe do a survey on our Eastern European friends favourite fish to eat ?? Sad
Just an idea Idea

I don't believe there's a fishing activity, legal or otherwise that would lead to a decline in pike numbers as such. Pike have a knack for exploding when a few upper heirarchy fish are removed, creating massive numbers of immature jacks.

If the pike are actually disappearing from waters, I'd suggest it has little to do with fishing activity and more to do with something environmental.

I'd also suggest that the E.A. probably think so too. Tagging fish would prove fruitless if the fish being tagged were being taken away in the backs of cars. That would prove nothing. You have to have fish, dead or otherwise, in order to collate any kind of information the tags would later provide.

Are they saying they are declining nationally or is it a regional survey
?

Having found set lines put out by these people recently I know how serious the problem is.
I think what Andy is saying , is when the bigger ones are removed that the average size of pike will go down, but not the actual numbers of individuals, which is what the EA seem to be concerned about. I know of places where pike were removed in quantity, sometimes by netting and they still remain in numbers.

Where is the tagging taking place?

That's basically what I'm driving at Rich. When the larger fish are removed, the numbers pike actually increase in most cases but as you say, the average size decreases.

As has been proved on fisheries up and down the UK for decades, you simply cannot control pike numbers by netting pike. It simply doesn't work. You might make a dent in the population for a season or two but you'll never get them all and pike will almost breed out of spite. If the larger specimens aren't there to control the numbers of youngsters arriving on the scene, you inevitably end up with a massive explosion of immature jacks, most of which are of a similar age and size.

If the pike are actually decreasing in number, regardless of size, that sounds to me like there's something going on that has little to do with Eastern Europeans, poor fishing practices, poaching or netting.

I've seen first hand what bad fishing practices does and I've seen what happens when a fishery suffers at the hands of noddies etc. and it has never resulted in a decrease in pike numbers for than a season or two.

From what I can find out the survey is only related to the pike population of the Norfolk Broads, not nationally.
