Hi Kell
well that's a whole new subject!! i am looking at getting a boat and this is all part of the cost etc
So i am going to ask next what would be the best type of boat for the Lake District
any help on either would be great

Yes, you can use 12 foot bank rods for boat fishing. Dave Lumb does rods like the LochTamers etc. but they're a fairly recent innovation and beyon most people's bank balances. Most pikers probably use their bank rods.

Re: Bank and Boat Rod question
I use both 10ft boat rods and 12ft bank rods from the boat with no problems. The boat rods are more convenient and being through action they are nicer to play fish on, especially when they get under the boat but you can get away with either.
I wouldn't use long carp style rods though, they tend to be fast taper and that could cause problems when the fish runs under the boat.

Sorry I have to disagree 12' is to big 10' is the maximum length I would use.

having had a boat and 11ft rods i would say it really doesn't matter. you actually have much more room around you out on the boat so use what ever you like

Maybe so but the fact remains most boat pikers did and still do use 12 foot rods and they did so quite happily for decades. Dedicated rods may well be better suited to the job but 12 foot rods are still no hinderance and they still do the job more than admirably.

with being quite new to the boat fishing scene having used 12 ft and 10 ft rods i must admit 10ft rods are better in a boat just because they store better and less cumbersome and like andy and eric says a lot better at playing fish at close quarters ive got some 9ft 2 and half pound test curve rods happy useing them too had fish to 23lb no probs on em

Although ive never had a problem with 12 footers, i think i would be quite happy with 9ft rods.
