I use stainless welding wire quite a lot, use 0.8mm for solid leaders, 1.2mm and 1.6mm for rigging soft lures.
The stuff i use is 316 grade or sometimes it's described as 316L grade, it's just a high quality, still very cheap though. Might be worth asking what grade the wire is before you buy.
Never had the wire i use fail on me yet, used it for over 12 years, i change it when i deem fit though, if it's kinked bad i change it, better safe than sorry.
I have used 0.6mm for leaders with small lures, but i found it springs a bit when a decent pike is hooked.
