when do you start proper piking
If like me you like to start piking when the first frosts arive about november normally, theres nothing like it a bit of frost under the foot it just feels right for me anyway.I know a lot of the lads on here fish for pike all year round so this wont apply to everybody i know its a traditional thing most people dont start till october . I like to get piking when we have had a few serious bouts of frosts as it cuts some of the weed down which is a big problem on some of the venues i fish. The colder weather seems to bring some swims back to life which have previosly been devoid of fish probably the fish are shoaling up in these areas in certain times of a year ie deep areas and snaggy swims
If like me you guys fish for other fish in summer course fishing takes up most of your time and a bit of sea fishing and dont forget fly fishing the year soon gets around to the cooler piking weather then all concentration goes on to my favourite fish cant wait to get started will be out this weekend but i wont be fully satisfied till theres a bit of frost and the thermals are on .......when do you start proper piking and what gets you up at 5am on a cold winters morning full of excitement ...........

Bit like yourself, don't really fish for the pike in summer, but what i do is camera fishing:lol!: , yes i know what you all thinking, as this guy lost the plot.
Well, to me it really is usefull, when the summer is in, this can really help i think in giving you the pictures of what you are fishing in the depths of winter when the waters are full up..of course there are tools that now do this, ie fish finders etc, but i think you cant beat photos of what, where, you going fishing...This was a practice that i took up on from a very keen pike fisherman from over the bridge, Mr.Hill... this fella has over 40 years behind him on pike fishing, and i must say, iv'e had the privilege of fishing with him on many a trip....

very true its a differant picture in winter dont know about this year as the rain has not been to bad and the water tables are down this year so wont be as saturated they venue i am visiting this weekend is 4 to 5 metres down at the moment so dont know what effect it will have on the fishing we will see......welsh piker wrote: Bit like yourself, don't really fish for the pike in summer, but what i do is camera fishing:lol!: , yes i know what you all thinking, as this guy lost the plot.

Re: when do you start proper piking
BANK only, no one fishes it for trout anymore, all boats removed. 300 year old estate type family owned lake, tree lined all the way around, 20ft at its deepest and averages 6-8ft. We are targeting the shallows 1st, nearest to the over grown island.stubbo wrote:will you be on the move on a boat livebait and lures or bank fishing .......Dave-Newman wrote:thank you very much... there arent many fishable pegs, but you can easily wade out 15/20yrds to cover all areas.
not aloud live baiting, even so im VERY VERY tempted to bring at least 3 or 4 (but i respect the owner) hes also a family friend. Wont be lure fishing, just concentrating on the deads. Like i said, this is only pike fished by 1 other bloke really and that is hardly ever

hard hard work saturday, very weedy shallow end which produced a 8.8lb but that had been hammered by something a lot bigger, 3 big striped scares on both sides.stubbo wrote:sound like it should produce dave stick with it pal you couldbeat your pb you never know
i even got bitten off
the deep end was over 15ft up to about 20, shall be targetting that when it actually gets cold.

Re: when do you start proper piking
I've just arranged my first session of the season with my mate Gavin.
26th of October before we can both get time off to go.
It can't come quick enough.
