yes been fishing for pike on the fly for a number of years now think alot of pike anglers are starting to switch on to it.
Had a few nice fish to the fly which i make myself just a big version of a zonker/ minky type fly with plenty of movement, took me a while to learn how to cast with these big flys but you need the right rod and line , something in the region of a 10wt rod and i use a 10wt line but then depends on what size fly your using it can be heart stopping action when you see a big pike homing in on your fly comes at it like a torpedo scares the bejesus out of you when you dont exspect it......... affraid affraid affraid

Hello there. I've got to say, fly fishing for pike is about the best thing I've ever done fully clothed. I absolutely love sitting behind a pair of rods, waiting for that twitch or beep; the float sailing away etc. But, having your arm wrenched out of its socket and being attached to something big and angry via a few ounces of carbon fly rod is absolutely stunning. I agree with Stubbo - you need the right gear. Airflow used to sell a 9foot, 9 wt 'Delta plus' rod, specifically for carp and pike (they may still sell them). I actually bought 2 and still have one which I use for the pike and for sea trout and salmon in low water on a local river but, when a decent pike's attached, it's something else. I could do with going up to a 10 wt and may do this year but, if you like fishing with lighter gear, the 9wt just about does it.

I use it with an airflow 'Forty Plus' floating line as it's basically a shooting head.

For a real laugh though - get yourself a float tube and get towed about! The difference the tube's made to my fishing up here in Scotland is unbelievable. I've got pretty serious knee problems which means mobility on the rough ground is a real pain - now, i just get in the tube and potter about. Towing a slowly trolled dead-bait is good fun but, fishing the drop-offs and all the little inaccessible places on the fly is pure heaven.

Good luck with the fishing.

(David Woolsoncroft Dodds book about pike fly fishing is a really useful start - he's got some good ideas and nice fly patterns to tie.)

Have a look on the Piketrek website. They specialise in all things to do with pike fly fishing - rods, gear, line but mainly fly tying stuff. Careful though, if you're into fly tying, you can end up giving the credit card a walloping...

Pretty sure they had a rod deal on, last time I looked.

Ahhh - I never looked at the prices of them. Sorry! My 9wt Delta Plus handles salmon and pike ok though it sometimes feels like I'm poking a tiger with a short stick! Good laugh though.

I don't think the Delta Plus is too much - mine were on offer, you know the sort of thing "Reduced from £149.99 to £49.99". The fact that they never sell any at the full price is irelevant...

its worth having a casting lesson if you have not done any fly casting just make sure they know what there doing
it will really help to put out the fly correctly and how to load the rod etc well worth it pal.
if you can get down to your local trout water and they will hire you a rod and you can practice casting you might even catch a few trout
plus there might be some one there who can give you a lesson or two.....but be careful its addictive that trout fishing.... santa

If I had to use just the one line, it would be a weight forward floater - my 'Airflow forty plus' has made such a difference to the enjoyment of a day's pike fly fishing, I'd reccommend them every time. Anything that makes casting a big pike fly easier is a REAL bonus - the forty plus does exactly that. You could always get a weight forward clear intermediate too or, to save the pennies, get a sinking and fast sinking poly-leader to add to the front of the floating line if you need to get the fly down a bit.

Seriously though - the forty plus will make such a difference to your enjoyment, I wouldn't use anything else.

Enjoy your fishing!

picked up the rod + reel Very Happy already ordered some line for it, weight forward floater stuff but not as expensive as the Airflow stuff i must admit Laughing ill use a length of non-floating mono to sink the fly a bit if needed.

im sure one day ill upgrade, will buy the more expensive stuff once ive hit the bug enough Very Happy

cheers!

Nice one! Buy a couple of poly leaders though to get your fly down if needed - They're only a few quid and really help.

You fix a braided loop onto the end of the fly line, then the poly-leader loops onto that. Your leader (mono) ties onto that, then your trace and your fly.

heres another question... ive never caught a 20lb + pike. lets for arguments sake say i hook one with a fly.... do i bring it in by hand i.e. keep stripping or will the line/pike be too hard on the hand so would need to reel in the slack and play the fish on the reel instead?!

Post  Richard Neath Mon Dec 24, 2012 12:16 pm

Hi there. Playing a big (or small) fish from the reel is my preferred choice but it really does depend on each individual fish. If you get a take close in and you've got 15 yards of line around your feet, it can be a pain to reel all that in while keeping a tight line on your fish unless he's going out at the same time and rate. Either way though, playing a decent fish by hand is easy enough and won't cut your skin - just make sure that the slack around you feet doesn't get tangled.
I would seriously consider buying a 'begining fly fishing' book, something that shows you the basics - it doesn't have to be specific to pike as it's fairly safe to say that the basic difference bewtween trout fly fishing and pike fly fishing is heavier tackle and a wire trace at the end.
As a guide - 100yards of backing on your reel - then your fly line - then (for simplicity's sake) a strong braided loop (for salmon ideally - they come in packs of 5 usually and are pretty easy to put on, after a bit of practice and swearing) - then your leader (I'd use decent 25lb mono. You can tie this on with a loop to loop arrangement).) Finally, 12 inches of trace wire and your fly. Your leader, for a floating line in fairly shallow water, needs to be about 8 foot long but experiment - the shorter the leader, the easier it is to cast generally. Try to get away with the least amount of 'hinges' at the trace end - swivels and links are a real pain when trying to cast a big pike fly. If you can get trace material that can be tied or twisted to create a loop and you're happy tieing your leader directly on to the trace then do that. At the other end, tie the fly on in the same way - it will mean re-tying every time you want to change fly but, your rig will cast better and, as long as you're confident in the fly pattern, you won't need to change too often anyway. Starting off with a longer trace (18 inches) will mean you can re-tie a few times before needing a complete new trace. Never go below about 10 inches though - 12 inches to be safe.
Have a good one and buy a fly fishing book for yourself for Christmas!
