pike venues
I was thinking as we all start a new season is it better to fish a lot of different venues or to concentrate of one or two

Re: pike venues
Each to their own, I would say pal. Obviously there are loads of different types of anglers , just within our own type of fishing. Individuals will want different things out of their fishing. There will be people who are just happy as anything just to be out pike fishing in beautiful surroundings and they don't blink an eyelid if they blank! They are just glad of the time out.
Other people will only fish venues where there is a definite chance of a 20, a 30 , or even a 40 pounder, and wouldn't think of entertaining a venue without a target fish.
I have been guilty of chasing the big uns and blanking more often in a season then catching, it is fantastic though to keep your hand in and get to know those venues where you are guaranteed a few runs in a session.
I think most of us will always have one or two venues to "fall back on" when the runs start drying up at those less productive places.
I have fished with quite a few lads on here over the last couple of years and I think that I am right in saying that those people tend to want to catch pike but when in the company of similar minded people, it isn't necessarily the be all and end all. Cheers Craig.

Re: pike venues
Am guilty of chasing big pike trying to better my pb I fished ten different venues last season with just one fish over twenty
pounds (23.5). I have tried concentrating on one trout fishery a few years go fish it ten times for one fish
This question came up because my fishing mate as signed up for a ten men syndicate water with pike in it over the thirty
pound mark (am not jealous). I am of to Scoltland in few weeks time chasing a thirty pound pike I know is there.

Re: pike venues
A lot of time may well be wasted chasing a particular pike imho. Personally I'd have a go at hooking into a particular pike but I wouldn't put all my time and effort into it and much prefer trying numerous venues and catching new fish.

Re: pike venues
I like to fish new venues most of the time, but if its all blanks on a big fish venue it can get boring
like someone said you can fall back on the easy water just to prove to yourself your not doing it wrong...........
talking to a guy I know went to chew had a 32lb fish first visit plus a 23lb and a few jacks .......is it luck or watercraft who knows.....

Re: pike venues
i like to fish with genuine pikers and will take anything that comes along, in thirty years of trying i've never had a twenty, come close many times but never had one yet. i have however met some great people, chewed a lifetimes worth of fat on the banks and enjoyed every session. for me its about having bait in the water and the anticipation of not knowing so for that reason i like fishing many and varied venues. i think of the poor anglers who paid a lot to fish a big local reservoir last year chasing a big fish thats supposedly in there and fished nowhere else. last i heard no fish came to any angler. thats pretty sad i reckon

the problem is a lot of specimen pike anglers keep quite about certain pike caught sometimes out of selfishness but sometimes for the pikes welfarerozzo wrote:i like to fish with genuine pikers and will take anything that comes along, in thirty years of trying i've never had a twenty, come close many times but never had one yet. i have however met some great people, chewed a lifetimes worth of fat on the banks and enjoyed every session. for me its about having bait in the water and the anticipation of not knowing so for that reason i like fishing many and varied venues. i think of the poor anglers who paid a lot to fish a big local reservoir last year chasing a big fish thats supposedly in there and fished nowhere else. last i heard no fish came to any angler. thats pretty sad i reckon

What could have been tho is the bit that keeps me soldiering on on hard venues, and the res in question the results could be very rewarding

It is that "not knowing" that keeps some people going, alternatively, some people wouldn't dream of fishing somewhere where they don't know for sure what's in there. I Am one of those that tends not to blink an eye when another blank comes along, but sometimes ..... You know the pike are there....... You know they know the baits there.......... You know you are doing everything right........ And STILL BLANK that gets to me sometimes.... Having said that , I find those blanks are a lot easier when you are in good company as Julian was referring to!

Re: pike venues
I was the only one pike fishing on that lake but there were six carp fishing. One of them came over to talk to me said he had
seen some big pike in the shallows. I have some fishing trips planned so I don't think I will get back there till November.
The forecast for the weekend is not good.

Re: pike venues
I may get a thirty someday but as long as I enjoy trying that's the main thing but I must admit I don't like too many blanks.
It's being retired that enables me to put the hours in. There's two old farts braving the weather tomorrow -I'll let you know how we get on. I know what you mean about time going fast am going to Soctland next week with my son he's 33 he was 13 when we first when pike fishing
