How frequently do you change your baits. I have just read in the Angling Times that you should change your baits once an hour

that's a lot of bait in a days fishing. I change mine about every three hours.

if you cant cast it, change it.
if you lose it, change it
if you have caught it and its buggered, change it
if it looks CRAP change it
if you cant hook it change it

unless none of those above happen, KEEP IT Smile

I probably change my bait about every hour but its been cast out twice by then into another position

I also like to inject oil into the bait on every cast

What about defrosting and re-freezing? How "fresh" does a bait have to be? surely a pike would scavange decaying fish in natural environment??

Depends on the type of bait. Tough baits like lamprey or eel can prob be refroze a couple times but bait like sardines are a 1 time bait. Dont think it makes too much difference to the pike I've caught on freshly killed perch as well scabby old mackerell that had prob been in n out the freezer a few times.

you will know when NOT to use a bait.....

sardines if not used can be re-frozen a few times, but i only cast these out frozen, so they will be fine.

trout, no issues ive used them re-froze loads of times, its only unless you cant hook them anymore, you ditch them.

tails, id prefer to the use FRESHER THE BETTER.

tough baits as per statement on the post above.

You bo have to be very careful about refreezing dead baits you can get food poisoning if you eat food after baiting up.

Just had a delivery from Luce Baits and that's the second I have had am going through a lot of bait at the moment.

Bacterial infection leading to vomiting and diarrhoea on to dehydration and then onto a problem with the potassium and sodium levels in my body
Had I been alone it could have ended differently
Wife to be sat and watched me stop speaking slump and eyes roll up I then started twitching
Next thing I know I was awake flying along to the hospital

This conversation has really made me think. I have been fishing for over sixty years (not continuously!) and never really given a thought to contacting diseases associated with handling fish, bait etc. As someone who will refreeze unused baits, I will certainly start using hand sanitizer in some form. Having come this far, I would hate to be incapacitated by a smelly fish!
