How long do pike live?
Lots of us will have seen 2 photos of the same pike, but what's the longest time span proven between two photos of the same fish?

Re: How long do pike live?
i once counted the annular rings on the scale of a mid twenty pike it was 14 yrs old- the rings were larger in its younger years leading to the conclusion that the fish grew faster when it was younger-altho the particular fishery that i caught the fish was in the decline and food for the pike wasnt in great abundance so the growth rate and size over a particular time is all relevant to the fishes environment and the abundance of food- hope this helps with your question

Re: How long do pike live?
That's some pretty good info. I think their lifespan is in the 15 year range, which I found I little hard to digest, since many other fish live for decades...literally. Must be a live fast, die young sort of thing.....lol

Re: How long do pike live?
a hundred years according to one local myth
its name were percy it weighed 50lb and it battled with a swan and both were found dead wrapped around each other
This beleive it or not is a serious story, the same lake while being only 20 ft deep at its deepest apparently has a villiage and church replete with steeple under it surface
any one wanting to do some digging here is the local angling club site

Re: How long do pike live?
i caught pike a few in 1986 around 8/10lb,all were photoed and logged, same fish came out 8/10 years later weighing in at low to mid 20s,this might suggest pike are close to 20 years old,but i don't think so because of there fast growth rate.
as a footnote:
a 32lb pike died? its age was estimated from the opeculam bone to be 12/14years old, very fast growth rate as you can see

Re: How long do pike live?
How big will last years hatch be now then? I would guess, as I've had some around the 1 - 2 lb mark they must be less than a year old. They were very pale green too.
If a pike can only live to approximately 15 years and carp can live to 50 years are there any similar comparisons in the mammal world? IE Tigers and Elephants.

Re: How long do pike live?
growth rate does vary, i have 4 koi all from same batch,1 year on , 1 fish is still the same size,2 fish are about 4",1 fish is close to 8" ?? they all live in same pond, same food etc.
i think its all down to genes.
come on Andy tou must have noticed your kids at school.how many kids looked tiny or giants compared to your own?

Re: How long do pike live?
I don't know about the 50 year idea but I reckon I'd be happy with the idea that they live to around 20 years. It's a figure that is easy enough to work with, especially when a water has been drained, had work done it, been over-fished etc. It gives you a little insight into possible recovery rates and potential sizes if the waters have been left alone or recovered for a known period of time.
I've also read in Mick Brown's Book, "The Practice & The Passion", he said something like some quarries that had only ceased works for 5 years had produced fish to over 20lbs. That's not long to wait really is it? Just shows that a water could regain potential if left alone for even a short period of time, given enough food to do so.

Re: How long do pike live?
Interesting that pike are known to have lived for 50 years (source PAC). I'd be fascinated to see the evidence.

Hmm...yes, apparently that was sourced from Bruno Broughton. I've got Doc Broughton's E-mail address. I might ask for some documentation relating to where he got that figure from. It would be very interesting.

refering to self evident sources id wager it would be from a remote upland water that is probably fairly acidic.
the harsh conditions sometimes favour longevity at the expense of the size they can attain
Re: How long do pike live?
Interesting theory but I've yet to know of many waters, acidic or not that have seriously impaired the growth of the pike within. Bear in mind I mostly fish acidic lochs of the tea-stained variety. Perch and trout certainly but pike it seems are less affected but you may well prove to be right. I cannot say.
