Where do Pike spawn in rivers
I have been fishing the Wye since Dec 14 and getting pretty consistent results from one or two swims in particular, the last 3 sessions I have fished (since 7th) have all been blanks so I was thinking that the Pike may have moved onto their spawning grounds?
What sort of water do they look for to spawn in, fast, slow, deep ? Not much weed about at this time of year (not much in the Wye at all this year) so I am interested to hear your views or perhaps you have witnessed old Esox at it !

Re: Where do Pike spawn in rivers
I don't think the Wye pike had spawned before the close season kicked in, the water was far too cold.
Pike always spawn in weed if they can find it. If there is no weed they will spawn on something similar like tree branches that trail in the river, long grass that trails in or man made things like netting, hay or fabric that has fallen in. They would naturally look for something in slack water but it doesn't necessarily have to be shallow.

...and if your results tailed off it might be because you're concentrating on too few swims. Catch all the resident pike enough times and they will either move or become very cautious, you should try branching out more.

Cheers Eric, thanks for the response.
Totally agree about me fishing more swims, I was also Barbel fishing the last week so a couple of swims ticked both boxes, lighter amount of gear with the lure rod next season I think!

Re: Where do Pike spawn in rivers
I went out on Saturday the 14th, for a close of season session on one local small river (not the Trent). I took my 9' spinning rod, ABU multiplier and some Sprats and Smelts to twitch / wobble. It was slow going. No interest in the usual swims until sunset, then a Jack shot out from under the bank and grabbed a smelt as I was about to lift it out. Another slightly larger fish was caught in the next swim. 20 yds out. I was beginning to wonder myself if they were spawning but obviously chose to feed at dusk
