HELLP!!!!!! Fish Bleeding from gills Empty HELLP!!!!!! Fish Bleeding from gills

Post  Tackle_talks Sun Aug 09, 2015 11:40 pm

Hi there I'm wondering if any one can tell me what I am doing wrong I have noticed that some of the small jacks that I have been getting occasionally bleed from there gills for a reason unknown to me I am not hooking them deep or any where near the gills but they still bleed. I have had the same problem with perch before so am wondering if it is a predator thing. I would be very thankful if any one can help me as I love to return fish in the condition they were in before capture capture.

Hi I have been having the small jacks from a small river mostly on 1" plastic plugs I crush the barbs for ease of un hooking but I have noticed the smaller pike of around 1-3 lb tend to bleed from there gills slit. I am not hooking them deep in the gills but they still bleed. I use long forceps to unhook and through the whole capture I I do not touch the gills. this happens to around 1 in 10 fish I get and is driving me mental.

The pike might be taking the lure deeper as it takes and as you strike the hooks or even the trace could be just catching the gills.

Didn't think of that do you know if the fish is likely to recover as I have seen fish with damaged gills.

Hi Tackle_talks as Fatcaff said the hooks must be catching the gills as the pike takes the lure and as you are striking the lure is pulled forward in the pikes mouth ( how hard are you striking ? )
If its only a small nick in the gills and not broken the gills at all the pike will recover ok Wink

If you are striking / pulling hard into the pike as it takes the lure try not doing it as hard you only need to pull into it with a little pressure just incase it has taken the lure to far down !
Hope this helps Very Happy Very Happy

When lure fishing I don't think theres much you can do unfortunately but, if you're deadbaiting dont leave your rods unattended and striking asap but again its not guaranteed.

HELLP!!!!!! Fish Bleeding from gills Empty lures with 3 sets of trebles

Post  stubbo Sun Sep 13, 2015 7:58 pm

some lures have 3 sets along its body ..,removing 2 sets and leaving the set nearest the tail would do ...you might not hook up as much but the damage should be less....and barbless of coarse...... Very Happy

I have also been having this problem lately with a few of the fish that i have been catching. I have gone out earlier than i usually would have due to being over excited. The fish have been hitting the baits a lot harder than in the deeper winter months and have fought significantly harder, again this could be down to the fact that they are bleeding so to speak from the gill/mouth. I have been fortunate to catch some great pike up to press this season and have been great full that they have been on the end of my rod only to find that some idiots have left sets of traces in there mouth and have simply just cut off at the top of the trace. I am glad i have caught these fish so that i have been able to safely remove the hook and traces without any damage to the fish. Again i think it is luck of the draw and it does happen and it has happened to us all no matter what people will say. Even in some cases a simple nick in the wrong area of the mouth will result in what looks to be a blood bath.
