You cannot predict anything in pike fishing and I had no idea that I would come across both Crabs and Mink this week.

The CRAB took a sprat.

The Mink may be taking the crab, the silverfish or the pike... or all three.

Your thoughts are welcomed.

Mink are not good news for the fish. I fished for Trout on Exmoor's River Barle many years ago. I was asked to report any Mink sightings to the landowner (Sir Bernard Whalley-Cohen, Lord Mayor of London at one time).
I didn't see any, glad to report. There used to be a Mink Hunt nr. Huddersfield, the Hunt Saboteurs used to go out to sabotage it...it was animal rights extremists who released the Mink in the 1st place! Rolling Eyes

Must be one of those American Mink as it is missing the white colouration on the top lip.

The European Mink is endangered because of the illegal introduction of the larger American Mink by animal rights activists.

More likely the 'Fur Trade' introduced the American Mink for Fur Farms, & the ALF or whoever released them into our countryside Wink Very Happy

Know only a LITTLE about Mink, recognised it on your photo mind...
Even less about Crabs Rolling Eyes There are reports of Chinese Mitten Crabs in the freshwater stretches of the Thames, they are large & aggresive affraid Males have "Fur" on their claws What a Face & they seem to be dissliked for some reason, think the EA is supposed to be informed, SURE EA needs to know about Mink Wink

Google the Chinky Mitten Crab and see, mate Very Happy

There's been mink on our local river for as long as I can remember and they've not exploded or done the water any harm that I can see in all the time they've been there. Panic about nothing IMO.
Dunno anything about mitten crabs but from what I can gather, they aren't good. I believe they burrow and eat an awful lot, just like crays then?

Chinese Mitten Crabs and Mink Empty mitten crabs

Post  jim on Mon Feb 23, 2009 2:30 pm

i caught one of these mitten crabs about a month ago in a small river in north notts.i had two baits nibbled to the bone (sardine) before i managed to hook the culprit.
it was most impressive the size of a dinner plater and scary,i pinned it through the head with a knife it just wouldnt bloody die.had to samp on it to kill it.

the bait it took was popped up a foot so can they swim one wonders ?
i informed the ea but as expected they couldnt even be botherd to acknowledge my mail to them.

i read that they got into uk as eggs in koe carp consignments, also read they need to go to the sea to breed no idea if this is correct.

I don't know either but I'd think a crab the size of a dinner plate could stand up a fair old way. 12 inches?? I suppose it's do-able. Maybe they just wind it in with their claws. I dunno either.

A lot have got here in the ballast carried by ships, there is Silt which provides the critters with a good habitat.

One victim of the Mink is the Water Vole, Mink predate them, as well as fish. Suppose that unless they are present in significant numbers they are not a big problem, they are not native & this is a lot of the argument against them..

There was a few years up when the mink did temporarily explode but as quickly as that happened, their numbers began to decline, just as dramatically, so it would seem they find a balance fairly quickly, unlike many other foreign species of flora and fauna. We still have huge numbers of bank voles up here and ever increasing numbers of kestrels, so I'm really not all that concerned about the mink at all. As far as I can tell, all 3 are living alongside each other. Granted, they probably don't appreciate each other's company but they're all there.

I see the crabs are mentioned in the weeklies today. I suspect they are here to stay and will eventually spread to most waters. Southfield Reservoirs was mentioned in the papers. This is a canal feeder not too far from, and connected to Goole. Goole is situated at the head of the Humber Estuary with all the Yorkshire Rivers and the Trent converging here.

You have been warned.....

BTW The it has been mentioned they are the size of a dinner plate in Thames. Well I have news for you. They are that size in the Trent too!
