Recommendation for first Baitcaster.

Hi All,

I am new to Pike fishing this year and am wanting to purchase a Baitcaster reel for lobbing lures around upto 100g.  This is a tentative step into the sport so I would like any recommendations of a Sub £100 baitcaster that won't give me a bad first experience and put me off them for life.

The internet seems to be full of Recommendations for expensive Baitcasters for experienced people, but not first timers like me.

 firsly can you cast a multiplyer type reel , they can be tricky if you are new to them , you might be better with a fixed spool

my brother cant get to grips with the multi , but does ok with a good strong fixed spool

No I am new to them, my only experience of multipliers is 'feathering' for mackerel off a boat. It seems to be a case of necessity, for larger casting rods there seems to be more options for baitcasters. That and I am up for trying something new.

I have been lure fishing for pike this year and am thinking that with my more regular venue being the Thames, bigger tackle could be required.

I have made up my mind to try them, I just don't want to make a wrong choice.

Spend a bit more m8 a cheaper reel tends to wig itself up more often
I had a Abu black max and it was a good reel but if u cast up wind and you forgot to adjust magnet or to brake the spool with your thumb it would overtake itself combine that with a heavy lure and it can break your line if you don't fish heavy enough
Whereas my new ambasador revo winch has a centrifugal brake
Not only does it cast further but it needs no adjusting and you need to act a right git to wig it up

I have looked at the reel, and it looks great.  But is it good for someone who has no experience in setting the reel up? And which Revo at you advocating?

Depends on what you like
I recommend one with centrifugal spool brake
And you have to decide for yourself whether you want a fast retrieve or a lot of winching power
The winch is slower witch suites me fine

Ps setting up the reel is easy
You tighten the small nob on the handles side until a light jerk of the rod makes your lure drop a few inches
If it keeps going the spool is to loose
And always over cast and stop the spool with your thumb
If u let the lure hit the water without stopping it the spool keeps going and you get a wig

Baitcasters are easier to get used to than they have ever been, they come with instructions on how best to set up and theres the internet to google for advice pretty much what you are doing now, or maybe someone can show you if you let them now where you are from? personally I wouldent start with a fixed spool they are a poor substitute.
