49 Strand Wire Empty 49 Strand Wire

Post  ozzie bates Mon Oct 12, 2015 8:27 pm

I have found that on local club waters which can be quite pressured, i get a lot more takes on thinner wires such as Drennan uncoated pike wire, whereas thicker and less supple wires like Fox carboflex seem to get a lot less takes when deadbaiting. However, the thinner, uncoated wires are not very durable and i have to replace after one or two fish. Has anybody used 49 strand wire as i believe it may solve this problem as it is thin and supple whilst being durable, if so is it worth the price?
Thanks
Oscar

I use it for lures and it does last longer
Try one or 2 and so you can compare and see what works best for your fishing
That way you can work out for yourself if the beter wire outlast the lesser to a degree that it makes sence
Economicly to use that

Thanks, good to know that it is more durable. I've ordered some of the PikePro wire - hopefully it does the trick!

I have used the ET 49 strand 35lb for the last 8 years and on a deadbait trace you can get plenty of sessions from one trace. The hooks usually go blunt before the wires kinked. 10m for €15 works out at about 30traces, so 50c each, cheap really.

I'd second ET wire , it's excellent ! I've got a little spool of savage gear wire I'm not too keen on though, seems to kink a bit too easy, I think it might be saved for the odd occasion that I go after the perch.

The PikePro wire arrived and seems really supple and pretty unkinkable after tying a couple of traces. Sounds like that ET wire is good though and i think it is cheaper so will definitely be trying that as well. Thanks for the replies!

drennan wire for me. i use the 30lb  for live baiting as its very thin. however it is very much stiffer than the berkley 30lb that i normally use. there was a few batches that were bad a couple of years ago and broke at low poundages but I've never had any issues with it myself, except the price that is!! Embarassed

having filmed pike attacking baits and lures , believe me they are not looking at the line and trace thickness.....don't be fooled you need thinner trace wire to get bites myself use 40lb wire which is very stiff it makes no difference to me anyways ........... Very Happy

Same here I've been using a cheap 7 strand for years and I haven't noticed a drop in runs compared too when I was using the more expensive stuff.

I don't quite agree with you there my friend
On extremely pressured clear water it makes a difference when fishing lures
I'm talking about waters where takes are carefull and a carefull followers are the order of the day

You could be right Dave, but theres very little pressure over here so it is different. I find it hard to believe though that a .05 mm difference in wire thickness would put a pike off, when its attacking inches of plastic with 2 or 3 huge thick gauge wire hanging from it Shocked

I am (un)fortunate enough to live in an area where every water gets molested at least 5 times a day
And I must admit that if I use my rod for small stuff with 0,12 braid and 15 pound cable
I get loads more folowers and takes
But I can't in good conscience fish so light in the tree/obstacle infested waters I like because having a pike spit out your lure is painful
But a pike breaking you of with a mouth full of metal is unacceptable
So I chose fish safety over numbers
But truthfully on low pressure waters where pike come flying in from far or murky water
It won't make a difference
And it's just not fair towards the fish to angle so light that it can snap of
After all You would not try hunting a bear with a bb gun

over the years I have gone heavier with my line and thicker with my wire and glad I did when I had the big girl heading for the anchor ropes ....... you just don't know when the big one is going to turn up in general dave.......... it pays to fish that bit heavier as you don't want to lose that fish of a life time...
