Ferox Trout season!
Pike are safe for a while as its time to hunt the deep water and illusive Ferox for a session or two. does anyone else target them By accident i have had 5 trout over 8lb, all wild fish too, but would love a double figure one before I get too old lol. Any tips greatly recieved
Re: Ferox Trout season!
I read a book called "Beneath the Black Water" by Jon Berry about one man's obsession in trying to catch Ferox trout.
It's not a book on how to catch them but its one of the best angling books I have read.
I have fished for them in the big glacier lakes without success. There is a loch in Scotland that is famous for them and I know someone who goes there fishing for a month every year.
Best of luck they are very hard to catch look forward to seeing a picture.

Re: Ferox Trout season!
Thanks Psion I will look out for that, I love a good read on a winters night. well it all started too well mate. Half an hour into the troll and bang!!!!! you know its a trout when they go airborne 50yds behind the boat Not sure its a Ferox or a big wild brown. but at 4lb 2oz its a Venue PB for me anyway. I had a micro jack later in the afternoon and that was it. happy enough start to the hunt Shite selfie as the sun destroyed the colors.
Re: Ferox Trout season!
Took the wife out for the day. fishing obviously And told her how I caught my trout the other day. well she must have listened properly as She managed a brace and both were bigger than mine lol. 4lb 9oz PB followed by a 4lb 10oz. We are getting bigger every day so that double figure trout should be mine come 2018 lol.
Re: Ferox Trout season!

Re: Ferox Trout season!
I dragged her out kicking and screaming lol. she says She doesnt mind if she catches or not, its all about the scenery. but you try getting the rod off of her when it hoops over in the rest Not a fecking chance i am not taking her tomorrow
Re: Ferox Trout season!
Not a bad place to spend a day. 2000+ acres and depths to over 60ft, they take some finding but if your patient they are there. relaxed!!!!
Re: Ferox Trout season!
You have to make Hay while the Sun shines they say lol. Lost a good one today, but managed to land two more belters, and a 4lb Pike made an appearance too A Venue PB 4lb 13oz.
And a battle scarred 3lb 5oz. Great sport on lightish tackle.

And you envied me cause we have zanders! lol
Near here we have 6 square foot of water shared by 1000 other anglers
I can not go fishing for 3 hours without coming across 5 other predator anglers witch offer good conversation, 56 old people with a pole trying to catch whitefish (all seated neatly at meter intervals and who all believe the only good pike is a dead pike because they eat all their roach) and 503 bivies
Inhabited by arsholes who expect me not to cast within a mile on either side of their location cause after all they own the canal and they stay all bloody weekend
And did I mention the cyclists on their race bikes (there are thousands of them here, actually counted them one day with my m8 on a deadbait sesion and we got to 500 within 2 hours) and every sunny day
They zip down the walkways by the canals at 40 kmh in groups 3 wide and 10 long that expect me to move so they would not have to brake
(Forgive me for ranting but I'm jealous as hell, I would love nothing more than to go fishing one day without seeing a single person or having to remove 35 empty beer cans from a swim that someone else left)

Re: Ferox Trout season!
Well Dave that really sounds like my kind of Hell. I dont want to bad mouth where you live but that does sound horrible!!!!! I have to be honest and tell you about today. The lough I was fishing is 1780 acres. And when I arrived there was fog and visibility was about 20mtrs. At lunch the fog cleared and made way for glorious sunshine, and there in the distance there was some other Bloody angler out on my lough lol lol lol. I honestly resented having to share several square miles of water with someone else. Thats how much water there is to choose from in Ireland. god was definitely an angler
Re: Ferox Trout season!
Belgium is a small very densly populated country
No real lakes to speak of near here mostly canals and man made forts
It's a pain because the pike are extremely experienced
And I'm honestly at times afraid to catch a big fish cause somebody will see and everybody knows somebody who fishes
I once caught a huge pike on a small canal that nobody fished cause nobody new there was fish there
Somebody saw 4 weeks later 5 different anglers and the trees were full of spinners
It's horrible

Re: Ferox Trout season!
I am originally from England and that can be very much the same in some areas. i was lucky to come from a place where there are lots of old estate (Lords houses) lakes and rivers so really enjoyed my fishing there. I came on Holiday to Ireland and after just 3 Days i phoned my Wife and told her to start packing, we are moving house. She laughed and a year later we moved into our new house lol. And for peace and quiet like this I would do it all again.
Re: Ferox Trout season!

Re: Ferox Trout season!
Went deadbaiting today
Was terrorised by thousands of cyclo losers who love nothing more than to shout you've got a bite as they fly by
To then have a Polish git cast his shad into my line causing a massive tangle
5 miles of canal And he has to come sit on my lap
Typical of them they look where you are see you've got a decent set up and are a serious angler then they sit right next to you
Because they understand that we have a good idea where the fish are
I honestly love winter and shit weather
No cyclists and only serious anglers who share my vieuws
And I'll gladly get soaked for that

Re: Ferox Trout season!
Its the way forward Mal lol. i love the solitude and the thought that I am the first person to have ever caught this beautiful creature.
Dave, i really feel for you mate. save a few Cents for a ferry crossing and fish some wild windswept waters, you would love it. I will give you a few waters to try

Re: Ferox Trout season!
Its great for the soul to get out in the countryside and away from lifes stresses, even if there are cyclists around lol. that lough is nearly 4000 acres Craig. It would take some spinning round lol
Re: Ferox Trout season!
Do you catch the trout on lures I know that a lot of the big ferox are caught on small trout.
I have got a week in June booked in Ireland for some summer pike fishing.

Re: Ferox Trout season!
I did Psion, i was trolling the deep 50ft areas with lures mid water, I was bottom bouncing small roach too but never had a touch on them, and they are the preferred method. Which county are you visiting? No water naming now lol.

Re: Ferox Trout season!
I have tried a style of them yes, but never caught using one. for deep work I use the trollernostering technique I wrote about in P&P and catch on that very often lol. You can constantly adjust the depth to hug the bottom all the time even as depths vary. I will email you the article if you PM me your address.

Well I blanked again yesterday, the recent rain had the lough the colour of hot chocolate so i should have came home. But the eternal optimist in all anglers had me going round in muddy circles for about 5hrs lol. every day is a school day they say and i learnt something
