Only deep water for me though, the bays will be left alone. Anyone else think this seasons gone too fast or think I am giving in too easily lol. in some of our mountain lakes here in North Wales they don,t spawn till late march so a few more deadbait sessions are on the cards , but from early april I mostly concentrate on lure fishing firstly trout on the rivers then pollack and bass, and from may onwards it,s back on the pike I just love fishing topwaters , and then when the coarse season starts on the rivers it,s pike ,chub ,perch and trout on lures

I have to ask why everyone puts the pike rods away in early spring? I've always found winter piking to be comparatively rubbish, and the real action occurs through summer (early mornings, late nights). I appreciate that the Highland waters I fish are cooler than those down south but I am just curious why piking is only done in winter. Is it simply traditional?

It is all to do with water temps J, pike suffer badly from over fighting when the waters warm, they get insufficient oxygen after a hard fight as they are sprinters not long distance runners. Low oxygen causes they think? brain damage and the pike sometimes die after being released. Also they wolf down baits fast when the y are warm blooded in the summer and the chance of deep hooking is increased too. Plenty of other species to target isnt there Wink

Other species yes, but I've never enjoyed winter piking. The issue is that in Scotland if it's calm enough to boat fish, it's frozen, if it's warm enough for the pike to be feeding, it's blowing a gale.

The water temperatures very rarely exceed 18 in high summer here and I've recaught some pike 7 times over one summer season? They seem to target pike during summer in Canada?

seen a few good pike go belly up in the warmer months , had one myself many years ago  early sept, very warm went belly up after the fight, sat in the water with the fish for over a hour but to no avail  , the fish looked ok when released but I spotted it in the middle of the lake an hour later belly up , the yanks fish very heavy braid or mono and bully the fish in very quickly to delay the fight  and get the fish back in very quickly , but my advice is to stick to the cooler months in general  ,water quality and depth plays a big part in summer fishing for pike , people will do what they thinks best , but my advice is start October...ish.... end pike fishing march / april depending where you are ...

That's exactly what I do. I fish close range (usually less than 15m) from a boat, 50lb braid and I can honestly say I've never had a pike do anything other than power off after release. Keep in mind that whilst water in Highland lochs can occasionally spike up to 20c, they are more typically 10-15c through summer.

The bit I usually fish is 10ft ish, but with only 4ft of clear water as it's weeds under that. Pike maraud about and takes are incredibly frequent. I love pike fishing (I really do) but struggle to get enthusiastic about fishing in freezing weather for sluggish fish and only a few runs. I always felt that piking through winter was more about the lack of anything else to fish for than it being the best season to catch them!

The season is fast coming to end it's a bit sad but I might try for one last trip up to Scotland before the close. What will we all be doing next? I will be out in the boat in April with a week booked on Loch Awe then its waiting for the rivers to open for Barbel and Chub fishing on the Severn and Wye.

The weather forecast for the next week is really quite chilly and with a bit of free time coming, I'm hoping to get up to my Highland loch on Thursday and Friday. The way the temperatures are looking, I might be lucky to even get out onto the loch on Thursday for the ice!

they have got to be one of the best tasting fish in the sea , after a big place or turbot , they don't need a lot of cooking too
a very hot pan a bit of oil , salt pepper that a few drops olive oil when its on the plate served with bean sprouts and stir fried veg and ginger and soy sauce. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
you would pay 20 quid for that in some restaurant's

regards steve
