I have been bought a multiplier reel, which looks like it must sit on a rod with the eyes on the top, not underneath as I would normally fish. Do I need a particular rod for this? I assume I cant use my normal lure rod but upside down? Do they have a spine on the side opposite the eyes? Any help needed, am really confused!!! Sad Mad Question Question Question

Reel rods usually have a trigger grip for better hold and more eyes (guides) to prevent the line hitting the rod blank but in theory
You can just fish it on a normal rod but the conditions are far from ideal

You can use it on a normal spinning rod but as Dave says it's more comfortable to use on a rod with a trigger grip reel seat. Give it a go with the rod you have and see how it feels.

if you've never used a multiplier,, keep your thumb lightly on the spool as you cast or you will get horrendous birds nests everytime you cast (unless it's one with casting drag fitted) you will need to practice a fair lot and it could be quite frustrating until you get it mastered. you need to stop the spool the instant your lure hits the water or birds nest city will occur every time Twisted Evil

Thanks Rozzo, I have watched a couple of good videos on how to use them. I have never before but fancied something new. Like to try new things. Just concerned about the use of the rod and seen what Eric and Dave said. Have seen a trigger section you can buy, not sure yet if this would fit on my rod. Wonder if this is something you can add. All on mail order, much rather go into a shop and try it.

you'll be fine with that, it has casting drag, just set it to the weight of your lure each time you change lures and you should be fine, and dont forget to set the main drag on the starwheel to whatever line you're using. i tend to have the main drag slightly light as my thumb makes the difference for striking, enjoy Wink

I'm quite the opposite mine is done up tight as hell for setting the hook
And if needs be I hit the cast button and regulate the amount of line given with my thumb
This has the advantage of being able to set the hook well and in case of a take right in close you can give very little
resistance allowing the fish to get to open water
I'm not saying my way is better, to each his own
Just saying there's different ways and it's up to you to figure out the way you like to fish

Thanks Dave. I have watched the vids which talk about the various drags. The one I saw showed the fuy using his thumb alot for the control. I will have to get on the bank and try it with a gentle pike on the end!! Here's hoping!!!

Problem with some reels is that the line aligner stays in one place when the slip goes
This has the effect that sometimes Your slip will not work as well
For example If the aligner is full left and your line is coming of the right side of the spool
With the thumb it's easy to adjust preasure
when your playing a nice fish last thing you want to be doing is fudging about with the slip
Because your line is snagging  on the spool

I will look at that Dave. Still not filled it with line yet. Have some braid so will fill it today. Does not seem to have a large capacity, but I guess its not for flinging long distance. Most of my fishing on rivers is close to near bank so should be perfect!

you'll be surprised how much it holds,, dont forget its a wider spool than the length of most fixed spools,, it will hold more than enough and at least double what you can cast Twisted Evil

Hi Rozzo.
So, I took it out, not to be used but as a practice with just a weight on the line and about second cast, boom! Huge birds nest. I sorted that and got a friend to help. I tightened the heel that as you hold up the lure, it just starts to fall. Then I was able to cast!! It really was smooth and felt a great set up. I have not caught on it yet though and have not been using it for all my lure fishing. I keep saying I will, so your message may just have inspired me!!!!

cool.
we have all had the birds nests lol. if you set the casting drag for each lure when you change them you will get very accurate with the casting. Very Happy
