Canal piking
Any hints or tips for canal piking?
I live close to a canal, and there is a section very close to home with a basin and car park which makes prebaiting very simple. I started this evening, lobbing about 8oz of chopped roach into two areas. I know it's lazy piking, but for daily prebaiting, it's got to be convenient and it's on my way home from work.
Having no experience canal pike fishing (but for a scabby 2lber on a spinner a few years ago), I'm wondering about fish locations. The whole main channel is very shallow (perhaps 3ft 6") and it is regularly used by boat traffic. The wider section I've chosen maintains this depth through the main channel, but the turning space is shallower still, at perhaps 2ft. I baited as far away from the main channel as possible, just where it drops off. It's still shallow though. Hoping the bait holds location with passing boats and brings pike in. Baiting early in the evening, in the hope that in time the pike know when to come in for a freebie.
Plan is a week or daily feeding and then try an evening fishing. Not expecting much, but thought it was worth the effort.
What do you reckon?

Plan is to use small roach. Hook baits are around 4-5" long, but the ground bait is smaller roach cut in half (usually 40-50 fish to the pound - tiddlers really).
I shall report back once I get the rods in

Re: Canal piking
caught my first twenty on a canal it was a lovely marked fish , caught next to the path wall within seconds of dropping the bait in
think I was leap frogging along the water at the time . I will dig out the picture if I can find it

Well the prebaiting campaign isn't going well - the canal is frozen over! Balls!
