Fly Lines For Pike Empty Fly Lines For Pike

Hya Folks,

I've tried a few different fly lines in the past for my piking. I had some Mill Ends of 40+ which I didn't take to and I'm now using a full length head floater from PikeTrek, which is OK for the drains I usually fish but not sure I can get the distance for bigger waters. So, ...... I was wondering what lines people use, there seem to be a few out there now for pike from the Rio, SKB and Airflow Sniper. What's peoples preferences?

cheers

Alan

been using the airflow and the rio both good had no problems yet with them obviously you need the correct rod for these lines
10 weight for me but I know guys who like to use lighter lines/rods

I use an Air Flo 40+ in a floater for nearly all my pike fly fishing. I tend to do most of it from a float tube (I live in Scotland and the lochs are simply easier to fish from afloat rather than the bank as access is usually pretty poor). I find it does all I need combined with a Delta Plus 9 wt rod.

Rio outbound is one I would strongly recommend, the line is the most important part of a fly set up

I've been PFFing for nearly 20 years and to date the best line I've used for distance is the Rio Outbound Short. This line is, in effect, a shooting head. The head is made 1/2 a weight heavier than the industry standard so a #10 should be used on a #10 rod. The only problem with this line is that the running line is a little too thin and is prone to the odd tangle and line twist (the twist can be removed by laying all the line on the floor and re reeling it back onto the reel). IMO a stripping basket is an essential bit of kit (if you're fishing from a boat a plastic trugg from a garden centre is an excellent choice).

Another vote for the Rio outbound. Switched to this line from an Orvis wonder line this year and the difference is staggering.
