I can't comment on Loch Awe, but with you being local (I'm near Linlithgow) I would love to pick your brain for local venues worth trying. As it is at the moment, I have to go to Aviemore for decent piking!

Do you fish the canal?Just heard they're draining a 3 mile section for 'maintenance'.Used to fish it years ago with great results but last few visits have been blanks, reckon it's due to people killing them.
Quite a few local public waters i used to fish have been emptied which is why i'm now having to fish further afield or fish private waters.Pm me if you want to chat😉.

I fished it for pike a year or two ago, just spinning and had a 2lb jack. Nothing else though. According to folk I spoke to today, almost all the fish electro fished were tiny pike. Few other fish. It implies all the big ones are gone.

Loch Awe trip

Always wanted to fish it,would be better to do an overnight but only have a day at it so would be good if it was productive!I did hear it was getting heavily fished the last few years but don't know anybody who fishes it so don't know catch results.

We were going to try that area but don't know if it still fishes good as every man and his dog fish it.Ive read that sea baits don't do well on Loch Awe,dunno how much truth is in that.
Anybody got any tips for Loch Awe?

Re: Loch Awe trip

Post  lorano on Mon Jan 30, 2017 6:39 pm

It was a good day out,Loch Awe is massive!!!We headed to a spot on the loch know as 'pike bay' and within 10 minutes i landed a nice 9lb fish.Unfortunately that was the only fish and only action the rest of the day.I was getting frustrated if im honest, the boat wasn't the quickest ive been in and because the water is so big it took a while to get from one swim to another. The anchor we were giving wasn't up to much so we kept drifting about which got annoying. After some time we decided to go up to north end of the loch which took us 45 minutes and there it was the ruins of Kilchurn castle,it was spectacular to see it opening up as we came up the loch.Sadly though it looked like T in the park.Bivvys everywhere along the bank and we counted at least 20 anglers.Even with us in a boat we couldn't fish anywhere for the amount of rods in the water so back down to pike bay it was.It was our first time up there so teething problems are expected i suppose, was 'sad' to see so many anglers fishing at the castle end as i can only imagine it's getting fished to death at that end.We are hoping to get up there in 3 weeks and fish the south end and hopefully have better results.😊

Hope i didn't paint a bad picture with my last post😂
It is a spectacular place it really is!
Booked up again tonight at a boating yard further down the loch.Guy we booked with on Sunday said it would take us 3 hours to get down to the south end by boat!!!!!😂
Itching to get back and right the wrongs!☺

Are you bank or boat fishing?Fishing from a boat on a water that size is a must i think.Kilchurn castle is a popular spot as we found out but the amount of anglers we saw there you would struggle to get into a swim. You can find a map of Loch Awe on google with favourite pike swims mapped on it which is helpful.Rainbow trout seem to do very well on this water(caught mine on a rainbow trout). We plan on fishing the south end next time, quite a good few bays down there so im told.I think the popularity with kilchurn castle is it's easy to access by car,you can park right next to the water and it's a 5 minute walk to the waters edge.We had high hopes for fishing that end but it was impossible even in a boat due to other anglers. The water was down so made that end shallow. We're back up in a few weeks so will report back on how we got on😊

Going back up again in a couple of weeks, booked a boat and permits with a guy further down the loch(south end) so will see how that goes.I think this time we will just concentrate on the one or 2 bays down there and stay down there!
