Three way blank today. Went fishing with two friends, one lost a couple of small jacks, the other made a newbie error on a strike (forgot to tighten the drag) but I didn't have a touch on my rods. Three runs on 6 rods for 7.5 hours is awful.

I've decided to largely put the rods away for winter. I'm going to do one weekend a month up in the Highlands on the loch that I always used to fish. One run every 30 minutes and a fish every 45 minutes on seasons through spring/summer/autumn. It's not quite so prolific over winter, but still productive. Why are there so few decent pike waters?

True enough. Good waters are kept secret and rightly so.

The water was quiet today due to the poor weather. Between the three of us we probably covered about a quarter of it with the 6 rods. Variety of different baits, some on the bottom, some popped up, drifting float, float on the bottom, from one margin to the other. I prepared a chum/groundbait mix that I spodded out over the baits. We pegged up on the spots which had won Sunday's match (figured a large shoal of small carp wouldn't have pike too far from them). No one caught anything (though there were only a few more people on the water).

I didn't really realise how good the water I fished was until I started fishing elsewhere. I had 93 fish from 18 sessions (mostly 4-6 hr sessions and never blanked) before I stopped fishing there. Daftly, I thought "it would be nice to fish waters with larger fish" but I'm more than happy to get fish averaging 7lb and the odd double if there are loads of them.

I wasn't talking about good waters, I was talking about decent anglers. You can have the best water in the world in front of you stuffed with massive Pike but it will never make a man into a decent angler.

True enough. I hope that's not intended as some sort of slight on my pike fishing ability! Laughing I wouldn't describe myself as a particularly talented pike angler (don't have the patience) but I'm a solid average.

We had incredibly delicate low resistance rigs (smaller hookbaits, most of which were hair rigged with a size 4 single), covered a lot of water and varied our approach. It's just a tough water.

I'll be back on the Highland loch in two weeks, so I'll have plenty of pictures of pike to post then. Cool

Very consistent fishing there Andy. You know you're onto a good stamp of fish when you post a picture of a 20lber and it looks a bit dinky!

Indeed! My largest (18lb 4oz) was 103cm and was by no means tubby.

Well done to all who's catching, always encouraging to see others land a few.A fourth blank on the trot was saved by a 10 1/2lber today.Thought I'd have a final go on the stretch I'd blanked on,so was very relieved to get one out.Now I'll definitely move on to a new area.
A bit of a dodgy photo.

Back on the Welsh lake yesterday with my son Stuart for company. I'm overdue a blank on there and yesterday was the day, conditions were absolutely perfect with overcast skies and a light ripple which on this exposed lake is a rarity. Stuart missed a run on his first cast with his Sardine lightly marked around it's head. Then in the afternoon he had a dropped run on a big Herring, again the bait was marked, my rods remained motionless all day. There is never a bad days fishing and it was good to have a dad and lad session together Very Happy
