A bit of rod advice please

I've spotted the Wychwood Extricator (6ft) the other day and the guy in the tackle shop said they are ideal for stalking and spinning or even light boat work (freshwater, not sea).

They are light as a feather and could easily be held all day long. The only thing I'm not keen on, is the fact they are a one piece rod.

The 9ft is two piece but too long for my liking. Having said that most pike/carp rods are two piece 12ft jobbies so end up being 6ft transport length anyway.

My current spinning rod is coming to the end of it's useful life now and I've priced up getting it refurbished but to be honest it works out too expensive. I can get a new rod for the price.

Has anybody got the Extricator or used one? If so what are your views?

It's a carp stalking rod. What are you wanting it for? Wobbling or something?

I like the look of a travel rod that I saw reviewed recently but I can't remember what it is. I'll dig out my old mags have a look.

I have a 6 foot six" Daiwa (whisker?) Jerkbait rod, it will cast up to 140gms! Don't find the length a problem. Use my 9footer for light lures & plugs.

Not really used it yet.... I plan to try it at a big deep old quarry after October (Piking not allowed between March 15th until October there. The heaviest Lure I have is about 80gms, its a crankbait similar to a Salmo Slider & about 6" long. The water I regularly fish is a bit smaller & shallow for this bait. I have one or two Zoota's that weigh maybe 30gms or so, great lures, I can recommend them I will resort to the housebrick when a fish is close & near the surface

You're right Andy, it is a carp stalking rod.

I have recently started stalking carp and using my dear old spinning rod for it but as I've already mentioned, it is getting a bit cream crackered now.

The rod would be used for stalking carp, spinning using the heavier lures that I've got (and will get ), wobbling (as you've already mentioned) and fishing from boats on lakes (but not very often).

I just thought it would make the ideal multi purpose rod. As I've already said, it is light as a feather, it has a through action and, to me anyway, doesn't appear to be too soft or too much like a broom handle.

The travel rod I saw recently was a SPRO Globetrotter. They come in 7ft (£43) and 9ft (£48) lengths and break down into 3 pieces. They are rated as 20 to 40 grammes and come in a cloth lined hard case.

The Anglers Mail (12th May) carried a piece on Oxhey Angling, 28 Pinner Road, Watford, Herts (01923 441110) which featured the rod.

I've had a look online and they look ideal for all my intended uses except for stalking carp.

The eyes seem to stand off from the blank by a fair bit so could snag on bushes and undergrowth I will encounter while after carp in the edges.

Definitely a nice looking rod and love the fact they are 3 piece - very transportable.

I suspect a stalking rod is really just a re-branded spinning rod anyway. Carpers don't go spinning so they couldn't possibly be seen using one, even if it's the correct tool for the job. So what do Greys and Fox etc. do??

You could be right there Andy.

Stalking rods do have low profile rings though to avoid snagging whilst scrambling among the bushes and stuff. Probably just a spinning rod re-rung then

It's the price and lack of weight that is seriously attracting me. But the 1 piece design is putting me off. A 2 or more piece rod will be easier to transport especially when we go on our hols because I only ever take my spinning gear with me.

I have seen quite a few travel rods that I like the look of and spotted some on fleabay that are 4 piece and it says they are spinning/stalking rods. Gonna take another look and email the guy to see what action they have. I'll post the link to them if they seem suitable.

try te multi section rod available from he CCG think its 25 quid four sections with a 2.75 tc
it does make a nice lure/boat/stalking rod.
its not to disimilar to the ET one and i mean Edddie turner as he is now not the
ET stuff in shops and most mags thats marketen by the frienly fisherman

I've emailed the guy to ask if it is a through action rod and also to clarify about the rings as the picture shows single legged rings with quite a stand off but the description says 3 legged rings.

I'll keep you all informed.

He has indeed Andy, here's his reply to my email:

"Hi, thanks I've changed the description now.
It is single leg rings as per the picture. It is a tip to middle action and weighs only 190 grams.

Well it certainly seems OK weight-wise and I like the fact that it is a compact transport length, and price seems spot-on.

I think this is worth considering but not being through action may not be able to absorb sudden lunges close in.

What do you guys think?
