Anyone been out piking yet?
I know its only just August folks, but the weathers been rotten so it feels more like October. I am ready to get the deadbaits out again as I usually start in September anyway. Has anyone been out piking yet, or are you all too busy catching c*rp and the like?

I think Trent Piker chucks a Lure in from time to time. Quite looking forward to doing some Bait fishing for Pike. I have not been Piking since catching the Canoe

Re: Anyone been out piking yet?
I half heartedly chucked a lure down the Grantham Canal for a blankety blank the other day. I did see a few jacks but left them be. Saw my mate there noddy fishing and threw a few blackberries at him, good fun! I'll be back on The Trent as soon as the rain stops and the level is back to normal, about two foot up at the moment and the colour of Yorkshire tea!
That would have been a PB canoe Bazz, pity it came off, gave you a right good fight though! HAHA

Well done deadbait
It's very interesting to see that you are getting better results in the warmer weather. The pike will be much more active at this time of year, chasing the little uns and feeding up ready for the winter. More activity requires more energy = more food needed.
I haven't been out since March and I am more than ready.

Re: Anyone been out piking yet?
I've not been able to get out much at all and when I have, it's only been for a session at a local pond or canal general coarse fishing.
My car has been sat on the driveway since the MOT ran out in April
I've changed all 4 disks and pads, bled the brakes, tidied up here and there, and done a full service. Just got a suspension spring to change and then she's going for her annual check up.
Fingers crossed!

Re: Anyone been out piking yet?
I got made redundant in November and got 5 weeks work in Perth which took me to Christmas and then 6 months on the dole and now a full time house husband due to our lass finding a full time job.
Can't get out though due to having a 2 year old son. Plus it's school summer hols as well.

Re: Anyone been out piking yet?
Not fished since March, but have spent the summer looking at new rivers / drains to launch the boat and getting all the gear and boat sorted.
If water temp remains cool I will start fishing again in September aiming to do 3 sessions per week until the rivers shut in March.
Can't wait I hope we have the same weather patterns as last winter proper Piking weather.
Good luck to all for the new season.

Dunno but I spent a lot of last winter not able to fish owing to frozen pits & a flooding river Trent
What do others reckon...?

was one of the new ones a four inch smuttly by any chance
i wanted that
Re: Anyone been out piking yet?
just back only fished an hour as cars playing up so off to garage , never had time to use the smuttly noodle , used a floating salmo slider and got my first bit of action on a jerkbait pike hit lure twice 10 ft in front of me, first time i was daydreaming 2secs later hit again but missed again, never set hooks quick enough due to inexperience{ maybe slight panic} , heart was pounding still buzzin, tru what they say about heart stopping when a pike hits a jerkbait on the surface deffo be away tommorrow , hopefully land something

I only had one trip last season that I was forced to abandon after launching, this was due to levels rising very quickly I thought it would prevent me getting the boat out plus there were very high winds on that day causing the river to do an impression of the North Sea!!. The hard frosts posed no problems apart from having to break ice to launch where the flow of the river was extemely slow.
The way I work is to always keep my options open so I will be to have at least 4 venues planned for my trip. A simple call to to river watch which is updated around 3.00am each day will then help me make my decision.
Another tip I use is to try and pick rivers where the source starts at different locations. So if it's raining hard the day before in the west look for somewhere in the east of the country and so on.
Hope this helps you get more time on the bank this season.
