Can anyone Recommend a Jerkbait rod?
Hi Guys,
I am new to this site and am looking for some advice. I have done a fair bit of lure fishing over the years with some sucess but recently I have been thinking I should give the large jerkbaits a try. Can anyone recommend a decent rod for this style of fishing, also are there any books/videos/articles on the subject?

Re: Can anyone Recommend a Jerkbait rod?
whats your budget for a rod reel and braid??
makes a difference as i could say a lumby custom build with a luna and 80lb power pro
or it could be a berkely lightening and second hand abu 6501 with 80lb power pro
one will set you back around a ton the other you wont have much change out of 600

Thanks for the reply mate. I was thinking up to a ton for the rod, I have a spare ABU 6501 from my beachcasting gear and was thinking of power pro braid as thats what I use on my regular lure rod and I've never had a problem with it, although obviously in much stronger breaking strain. If I could pick up a decent rod second hand that would be even better.

up to a ton gives you a whole world of ready made rods from fox greys nash shimano daiwa...
best ive used are the nash but they are like hens teeth now the daiwa is a very good option if you could stretch a little further then your in lumbys price range sledge hammers are 130

Have picked up a daiwa whisker (casts 2-6 oz) for £30 its secondhand but in mint condition, hopefully it'll be ok for getting me used to jerkbait fishing until I can afford something better. Now I need to decide on the braid, I am a big fan of powerpro for my regular lure setup, what breaking strain would you guys recommend, 60-80lb? Also while Im here any suggestions for traces? Thanks for the replies.

That isn't jerkbait gear though. That's for light plugging, jigging, mini-jerks etc. When using jerkbaits, think 180Lb stainless steel or titanium single strand from Rok Max and 80-100lb braid. You wouldn't get far throwing a Mag Dawg on your gear. Then again, you might be right into casting off 20 quid lures for fun....
Put it this way, I use 24lb 49 strand when perch fishing with lures, just in case a pike turns up. That's for throwing grubs and size 1 mepps around.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry MrMak I was talking about traces for the large jerkbaits (100grams+) not standard lure fishing. Are there any ready made jerkbait traces that are worth using? I see Fox make some but wasn't sure how good they are.

I have that rod with an ABU Multiplier, not really much into lure fishing myself but I can't fault the rod for the money...

Yeah, the "Jerkbaits" Andy & the original poster are talking about are big lures, they are retrieved using a 'Tippy' jerky action to make them 'dance' in the water... The braid on my multi is around 80lb, if you try casting lures of this size on anything less, they tend to "Crack off" under their own momentum & keep going...
The traces I use for jerks are 30+ (middy) ones, single strand, about 200lb bs. 28lb standard traces are ok for 2-3" plugs & Mepps etc... & little Shads & jig heads etc.

Re: Can anyone Recommend a Jerkbait rod?
the fox jerk traces are ok they are heavy though so expect your lure to act as though its nose heavy
buy them by all means but id also buy something lighter as well such as a Ti one several are available but they retail around 5-7 quid each

Re: Can anyone Recommend a Jerkbait rod?
First off, A Diawa Whisker 'anything', never mind a lure rod, is probably going to be quite reasonable. I've handled all sorts of Whisker rods and they're all good. In fact there was once a time (probably going back back 25+ years now right enough) when the Whisker range was Daiwa's flagship model. I've got old fishing mags from the 70s and 80s with all kinds of new rods and tackle and I remember looking at Whisker rods and thinking they were completely out of my price range. Times and blanks have moved on but they can't have been that bad because my mate still uses 2 Whisker carp rods (for piking) from who knows when and although a bit beaten up, they still do the job admirably. I've told him to get them sent back to Daiwa (the factory is 10 mins along the road too in Netherton) for a refurb but he's not for caring.
Fox jerkbait traces vary depending on who was their in house lure consultant at the time. They've produced a few types but in general, I have to agree with Noodle. The hardware attached to the wire was often a wee bit over-gunned and they could alter the weight of certain lures. Some were a bit short in my opinion too. I've seen Fox jerk traces that couldn't have much more than 7" long. Just a bit too short for comfort in my opinion.
Ti wires are good and you can often have the same one for literally months, so expensive in the long run they're not. They might seem to be initially but they don't kink etc. The only problem with Titanium traces is you don't know when they are going to fail. Ti wire has a bit of stretch to it and it recoils. I have no idea how many times you can whack them out, with how much force or with whatever weight of lure and know for sure when it's going to break.
I tend to go for stainless steel and just bin it when it looks a bit wonky or the snap-links have been opened what I imagine is once too many times. They'd probably last another 12 sessions, unless they get wrapped round a prop-shaft (which I have done and not recommended) but I'm funny about traces, so I just get new ones when I lose confidence in them.
You can buy wire of all kinds from Rok Max, who once just sold wire among other bits of hardware (in fact I'm 99% sure they didn't have anything to do with fishing whatsoever) but a few years back, when jerkbaits became super trendy, must have realised that there was a lot of lure people phoning them up and asking for 'jerkbait' wire and now they're a tackle dealers. Funny how a trend can change a wire companies fortunes.
