well i recognise the arms..... from fox drop off swingers, i have a pair myself as a back up incase one or both my drop off alarms fail/break OR if i take one of my mates who doesnt have his/her own gear but wants to fish themselves.
to be totally honest though i dont quite get why you modified them, mine work perfectly in their original incarnation, but still well done mate, they DO look good Very Happy cheers

I've got one that is the chain type. I know that ideally you are supposed to use the rod type on the rear rest but I've been using mine on the front rest carp stylee. But I've never really been happy with that setup.

Am I better off using a rod one and keeping the chain one for when going for carp?

i'd say definitely yes mate...... set it up at the rear end clipped up as light as you can get away with (so only a light pull releases the line from the clip) and fish your bait on a free running ledger with the bale arm open (NOT closed with the baitrunner engaged as this creates alot more resistance), that way when a pike does take the bait all it takes is 1 light pull and then no resistance at all to run and eat, then get hooked and end up in a photo Very Happy

I had two x Fox Pike Swingers, one with a broken line gate (spring broke in it Rolling Eyes ), I was going to donate them to NottsPAC raffle, or put a better clip on but thought of a better idea.. I had a 30plus chain bobbin also.
Using my engineering skills + a lathe & Bridgeport miller I manufactured two x st steel hinges, similar to the Billy ones but metal, not plastic..
I have two alarmed Billy's Backbiters which are superb, with these two also (if they actually work Laughing Rolling Eyes ) I can in future fish a possible two more rods. I have posted this photo on another forum, a member has PM'd me asking me to make him two.. Shocked
Wouldn't fancy making two more of those hinges......a pig to make they were!!

Alex, fancy a deadbait trip...? cheers

If you intend to bait fish for pike then indicators are a must mate. Yes, you could sit and watch floats all day but when you take into account that some pike sessions might drag on for 3 days or more and some of that period in the dark, then you cannot claim that you'll 'keep and eye out for bites'. The simple fact is, pike will almost always take a bait when you aren't paying attention. You'll be looking at something, sorting out your kit, making a cuppa, going for a pee or worse and sure as anything, that's when your bait will get scoffed.

Bite indication is EVERYTHING in pike fishing Duane. Take that advice with a pinch of salt and you'll be inverting guts in no time I assure you. It can take seconds for a reasonable sized pike to woof a bait down. Bear in mind a pike can COMFORTABLY eat anything up to a 3rd of own bodyweight. That means a 20lber will easily make a meal of a whole 6-7lb jack no sweat AND it'll still take a bait afterwards. Your little bait is nothing. It's a mere snack. If the pike wants to gob the whole lot in a matter of seconds, you'll have problems on your hands and worse still, you might have a dead apex predator on your hands and that could alter the whole environment in one fail swoop. You have to know when a pike takes immediately.

Indicators don't just tell you when a pike takes the bait. The line-clip, weighted head mechanism is there to show you drop-backs as well as runs. If the fish moves towards you, you get a slack line and no indication is shown. An indicator used in conjunction with an alarm will tell you immediately if a pike has touched your bait and no messing.

The rear drop-arm indicators as shown in this thread also serve to keep the line under control if you use the open-bail arm method. Some folk prefer bait-runners but even still, they still use indicators and alarms to show drop-backs.

If you read the dropped run thread you'll also understand why it is advantageous to have the drop-arm indicator set tight under the spool.

Indicators aren't for show mate. They're essential parts of the pike fishing kit.

Thanks for the explanation Andy. Wink After reading this and a few other threads, I can see the importance of indication when pike fishing and will definately be investing in the right gear for the job.
Still got a lot to learn about piking so please be patient with me lads........... Embarassed
