Tackling softbaits
Well For starters I have never used a softbait before, i mainly use lamprey(caught on) and smelt(had 'sniffs')........ but I am thinking about sardine or spratt being added to my bait bag, what do you lads use to stop them flying off the hook when casting...........
Re: Tackling softbaits
am useing bait elastic for the sardines at the moment, but only when i have to use them thawed out
but it is best to cast both these out frozen! sumtimes you mite get 2 casts if your lucky

Use Sardines quite a bit, I normally just try and keep them frozen on the bank and hook them on normally, don't use Sprats at all now days mainly because they are too small for my liking but, I had loads on them when I was a kid and I did have my first 20 on them in 1993.

if you use them frozen, they should stay on the hooks even with a good cast. main point is when you cast try to keep it a nice smooth movement. don't try to punch them out hard, cos all you'll do it lose your bait. ok you wont get it 80yds plus but they should still cast 50yds. when they thaw out, just drop them in the margin

Re: Tackling softbaits
just keep the sardines for shortr range work even bait elastic fuse wire casting clips plumbers freezer spray only help to a small degree
soft rods and a smooth cast help more, to the extent i carry a dedicated sardine rod 2LB century cannon i wont even try throwing them on my deadbait rods

Re: Tackling softbaits
a quick whipping of PVA tape/string these days for me. used to use bait elastic but was worried about pike injesting it so switched to pva. just throighly dry the tail end trebble/sardine by dabbing with a bit of kitchen towel first befote you whip on the pva.

Re: Tackling softbaits
you could put one treble through the head and the other in the flank and keep too the margins with the sardines, or popup has deadbait of the deck, or chop some up and hair rig them on a float.

Re: Tackling softbaits
I can't comment on sardines as I've never used them but sprats have done me well.
Just make sure that the 'tail' hook goes through the bone and you will find it gets a good hold.
As MBA points out, you won't get huge casts from soft fish but it is much easier to cast them whilst frozen and when they are thawed out I just drop them in the margins or give a gentle underarm cast.
Good tip about using pva.

Re: Tackling softbaits
i use sardines almost exclusively when i can and very rarely have one fly off on the cast even when putting them out 50 yards+ when defrosted....
first point is to make sure (as lefty has already said) that the hook in the tail goes right through the tail root, i've found that the best point to put this hook is about 1cm from the end of the tail... put the treble in until you feel the bone then wiggle it around slightly until you feel a "delve" in the bone itself (this is actually a joint between 2 of the tail bones) and put the treble right through the tail and out of the other side at that point. its better than just forcing the hook through because it goes through the cartilage inbetween the bones creating a stronger more reliable hold.
second point is instead of just giving the cast loads of welly and jerk and hoping that the bait stays on try to accelerate the rod a bit more gradually so that the initial pull on the bait isnt so much (kinda like beach casting when winding up the rod for a power cast), you should find that by doing this you cast far fewer baits off even when putting them out a good distance.

Re: Tackling softbaits
its not only sardines that come off mid cast
ive disintegrated a mackeral mid wind up its a very odd feeling when the rod goes light and then your back gets peppered by mackeral shot
mind you ive also cast lamprey off and cracked 40lb shockleaders off (carping on the occaisions of shockleaders)
id love to know how you keep something frozen all day they do start to go soft fairly quickly thats why i tried the freezong spray from the plumbers
it didnt work

Re: Tackling softbaits
keeping stuff frozen is easy mate... 2 cool bags of slightly differing sizes, placed one inside the other..... then get several (about 5 does the trick) carrier bags and again place them all inside one another so that you have a multi-layered carrier bag (these bags work in the same way as multi-layered winter clothing but obviously reversed).
put all frozen baits in the carrier bag, fold it over so there is very little air flow, then place the plastic bundle inside the inner freezer bag and zip the lot up.... as long as you keep air exposure time to a minimum i.e. keep the baits wrapped and zipped up in the freezer bags then you should find that they're almost as frozen when you take them out at the end of the day as when you put them in.

another way is to use the deadbait casting clip you can really punch a soft bait out its really has made a differance to my fishing. And you dont lose your bait

Re: Tackling softbaits
The best way to hook sprats for castin when NOT frozen is to hook them in the gill plates, Heavyer baits like sardine and mackrell just make you trace with the hooks 3" appart, So it allows you to wrap the wire once around the body,
