DRENNAN 7-STRAND TRACE WIRE Empty DRENNAN 7-STRAND TRACE WIRE

Post  robh107 Fri Mar 13, 2009 11:31 pm

personally i've used it since the start of my piking career and found it to be ultra reliable...... UNTIL THIS SEASON. i bought a new spool back in september last year in 24lb b/s, and re-did all my used traces with it. since then i've had traces part on snags inbetween the swivel and the hooks (as opposed to my 15lb daiwa sensor mainline) on no less than 4 occasions under less strain than i would put on a heavyweight fish, this has really worried me that drennan have let their quality slip with their latest batches of wire as i've never had this problem before in over 15 years of using it.
i must emphasise that the traces that have parted were kink free and on all but one occasion had been fresh off the winder the same morning,
luckily i havent had one part on a fish.

has anyone else had similar issues???

I've never had any bother with Drennan wire but a lot of people don't like it. I sometimes wonder if it's just a case that you're going to get some dodgy batches now and again and if you do have a problem, take the wire back or send it back to Drennan. Discussing among ourselves won't fix the problem, whatever that problem may be.
Only if a certain product or the manufacturer has been proven to be consistently poor, will I refuse to use it/them.

as you say Andy...take wire back to shop or better still send it direct to manufacturer, most large companies us a PIR system to detemin if a product has a batch fault or build fault. if they don't no there is a problem with a product of there's then they don't know to fix it.
in most cases they will replace item and send good-will gesture in the form of vouchers or free-bys.

Drennan 7 strand has been a regular fixture in my deadbaiting and I have not had a problem with it. I also use the Fox easytwist which I see slated from time to time but again, I haven't had any problems with that either.

I did read somewhere that there was a bad batch of Drennan last year. Can't corroborate this with any evidence so I will use it again as and when I need to buy more wire.

I am not slave to one make. I will buy whatever is on the shelf of the shop that I am in. That way I will from time to time come across a type of wire that I particularly like (such as Linea Effe for lure fishing). Those who stick slavishly to one type may just be missing out on a great new product.

I have a 15yr old spool of Drennan 7 strand, find it ok but it kinks quite easily. Its in 20lb so I have moved up to Fox Carboflex @ 30lb.

My partner in crime at PAC RA26, Alan Dudhill, makes very professional traces (see Steve Ormrod's review in current Pikelines). He uses a nylon coated wire which on all accounts is the 'Muts Nuts'! He will sell the wire seperately, I believe. Cool

Funny you should say that.I've always used it and had no probs but last saturday I got cought on a snag too and my trace snapped half way along,I'd only tied it the night before and that was 24lb bs,suppose it might have got kinked.
